Lakers’ Davis injured
The Lakers’ Anthony Davis was injured in the first quarter of a 91-77 loss to the Nets in the finale of the NBA China Games series in Shenzhen, China. The three-time All-NBA forward will have tests Sunday in Los Angeles to determine the severity of a right thumb injury initially diagnosed as a sprain. Davis was acquired in June from the Pelicans in a blockbuster deal for G Lonzo Ball, F Brandon Ingram, G Josh Hart and three first-round picks.
Baseball: INF David Freese announced his retirement after a 10-year career that included a World Series title with the Cardinals in 2011 when he was MVP. Freese, 36, also played with the Dodgers, Angels and Pirates.
Football: Rams RB Todd Gurley won’t play against the 49ers on Sunday because of a bruised left thigh suffered in a loss to the Seahawks on Oct. 3. ... The Redskins placed TE Jordan Reed on injured reserve as he continues to deal with the effects of a concussion suffered in the preseason.
Gymnastics: Simone Biles won the women’s vault competition at the gymnastics world championships in Stuttgart, Germany.
Soccer: Italy overcame Greece’s defensive tactics for a 2-0 win to qualify for the European Championship and ensure the Azzurri will play in the tournament’s opening match in Rome next June.
Tennis: American teenager Coco Gauff reached her first WTA final by beating Andrea Petkovic 6-4, 6-4 at the Upper Austria Ladies in Linz, Austria. Gauff, 15, faces 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia in the final.
