‘Wheel of Fortune’ seeks contestants

- By Johnny Diaz

Fans of buying vowels, solving puzzles and watching Pat Sajak and Vanna White can look forward to the arrival of “The Wheelmobile” in South Florida.

The 36-foot yellow Winnebago, which travels around the country looking for “Wheel of Fortune” contestants, will stop Oct. 26-27 at the Miccosukee Resort & Gaming, 500 SW 177th Ave. in Miami, at the resort’s Entertainment Dome, according to WPLG-Ch. 10.

“Wheel of Fortune” producers are looking for folks who are “energetic, enthusiastic and fun.” Applications to audition will be handed out one hour before scheduled shows at 2:00, 3:30 and 5:00 p.m, according to WPLG.

Each day, there will be three mock shows, lasting about an hour.

Contestants, who have to be at least 18-years-old, will be called on stage in groups of five to play the game. At the end of the puzzle, participants will be awarded some “Wheel of Fortune” swag (hats, t-shirts and duffle bags are among the prizes.)

After a month, those contestants who impressed the judges will receive a letter asking them back to participate in a final round of auditions.

That could land a South Floridian a spot on the show, which airs 7 p.m. weekdays on WPLG in Miami and Fort Lauderdale and WPBF-Ch. 25 in West Palm Beach.

The show has had some wheel love for South Florida.

In recent years, the bus has pulled into the Westfield Broward Mall in Plantation for tryouts. That’s where South Florida friends Staci Hill and Cathy Murray auditioned. A year later, they competed on the show during “Girlfriend Getaways” week. They won $65,100 in cash and a trip to Puerto Rico.

In April, hosts Sajak and White were in town where they spent three days shooting in various spots.

They filmed on Fort Lauderdale beach, Miami Beach, in Everglades National Park, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Coral Gables and Café La Trova in Miami. Some scenes were also filmed at Big City Tavern on Las Olas Boulevard. That episode will air in February 2020, just in time for spring break.

“Next season, there will be a week saluting South Florida,” Sajak told WPLG while filming on Fort Lauderdale beach .
