State deaths reach 2,447

At least 2,447 people in Florida have died from the new coronaviru­s pandemic, state health officials reported Saturday. MiamiDade, Broward and Palm Beach counties account for 1,350 of the deaths.

Overall, it’s a rise of 34 reported deaths over the previous day across the state.

The Department of Health says 995,886 people have been swabbed for COVID-19, and 55,424 have tested positive. That’s about 5.6%.

This data shows an increase of 927 cases recorded in the last 24 hours.

The death toll now stands at 700 in MiamiDade County, the epicenter for infections in Florida. There have been 337 deaths in Palm Beach County and 313 in Broward, the state said. Miami-Dade had a one- day increase of 15 deaths.

For the three counties, reports show there have been 30,791 infected individual­s since the outbreak began.

Also, 10,113 people have been treated in Florida hospitals for COVID-19 illness, the state reported.

Testing trends in South Florida

The percentage of people diagnosed with the disease has been steadily declining in South Florida.

As of Saturday, MiamiDade County had tested 177,039 people, and 10.1% of those tests were positive for COVID-19. But four weeks ago, 14% of those swabbed were confirmed positive in that county.

In Broward, there have been 103,972 people tested so far, according to the reports. Of those, 6.8% were positive, a drop from 10% on May 2.

And i n Palm Beach County, there have been 72,673 tests, with 8.1% positive. That’s down from 10% four weeks ago.

U.S., global view

The coronaviru­s death toll in the United States reached 103,472 on Saturday afternoon, according to the Johns Hopkins University & Medicine Coronaviru­s Resource Center.

The U.S. has had over 1.7 million coronaviru­s cases, the most of any country in the world. There have been at least 41,344 deaths in the national hot spots of New York and New Jersey.

Johns Hopkins University has also reported 6 million cases worldwide. At least 367,183 people have died. Brazil has the second highest number of cases, with 465,166.
