- By Brett Shweky

The OJ McDuffie Catch 81 Foundation and Holy Mackerel Brewing recently helped members of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County ensure families in the program don’t go hungry during this pandemic.

By donating Publix gift cards and meals to the nonprofit, the Big Brothers Big Sisters Broward team was able to deliver the donations to households negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. In total, 20 $100 Publix gift cards were purchased and donated by the OJ McDuffie Catch 81 Foundation, while Holy Mackerel delivered 20 meals to be donated to the families.

The foundation, a nonprofit fundraising organization, was established with the goal to raise money for children’s charitable causes throughout South Florida.

“I’m so encouraged to see organizations like Catch 81, Holy Mackerel and

Big Brothers Big Sisters stand together to better the lives of those in desperate need,” said Chad Van Horn, board vicechairman of Big Brothers Big Sisters Broward. “I’m so grateful to my friend OJ McDuffie and the folks at Holy Mackerel for their inspiring generosity.”

Holy Mackerel plans to continue to provide meals by donating food for 40 households per week throughout May that will be delivered by BBBS to families in the program. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County has the mission of enabling youth to achieve their full potential by establishing one-on-one mentoring relationships.

The Wilton Manors brewery has been providing meals to first responders and foodservice employees out of work. Holy Mackerel has also been donating to families in the Wilton Manors community financially affected by the crisis.

“We started by donating free food and then that turned into building a relationship,” said Kimberlie Marie, events manager for Holy Mackerel Brewing. “Now, we’re able to provide and assist with a little bit more. The mission is not over.”
