Community rallies around annual Rotary Run for Tomorrow

- By Emmett Hall

The Rotary Club of Weston is navigating the challenges brought forth due to COVID-19 and will be putting on the 23rd annual Rotary Run for Tomorrow.

The virtual running event will include an in-person Health & Fitness Festival and the Mayor’s Get Fit Challenge on Sunday, Dec. 6, which will take place at multiple locations in Weston including Cypress Bay High School and Vista Park from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The City of Weston and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital have partnered to be co-title sponsors of the event. There continues to be an outpouring of support from the community. Some of the Weston companies who have come on board as sponsors are DynaServ, Ultimate Kronos Group as well as many other local and regional businesses.

The Rotary Club of Weston has played an integral part in the city’s history since 1986 and has been committed to supporting youth and family services to those in need.

College scholarship awards have been given to seniors from Cypress Bay and Western high schools in excess of $1 million.

The Run for Tomorrow & Family Festival has generated over $500,000 for charities and nonprofit organizations. There are over 130 men and women of the Rotary Club who are committed to raising funds for community and international projects.

“The Rotary Club of Weston is very thankful to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital for its generous sponsorship, which ties into the City of Weston’s dedication and commitment to infrastructure and programs that promote exercise, safety and a healthy lifestyle,” said Rotary Club of Weston member Frank Dreier.

The Mayor’s Get Fit Challenge and the Health and Fitness Festival is a free event that is open to the public. It will feature fitness, wellness and health activities at each location. Registration is necessary for the Mayor’s Get Fit Challenge and all elementary schools have been invited to attend and are in the running for cash prizes and awards. The school with the most participants will be awarded the Mayor’s Get Fit Challenge award.

“Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital provides high-quality, safe, worldclass pediatric care for children and families in South Florida and beyond, but that’s not our only mission,” Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital CEO Caitlin Stella said. “We’re also active in preventing illness, injury, and promoting health and wellness for children and families in the communities we serve. Love is at the center of everything we do. We are thrilled to support this event.”

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, all the running events will be virtual runs including the 5K, 10K, half marathon and half marathon relay. The results will be tracked by Racejoy and the times will be entered into a central database. Runners can choose their own location and registration is open from now until Sunday, Dec. 13.
