Thanksgiving essentials delivered to families in need

- By Kari Barnett

It was a special delivery for families served by the Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center. Turkey, mashed potatoes, cornbread mix and everything they needed to create a Thanksgiving feast was brought to their doorstep by over 200 volunteer drivers.

The 28th annual Thanksgiving Basket Brigade helped 1,300 CDTC families caring for a child with special healthcare needs who registered in advance for the baskets.

“The Thanksgiving Basket Brigade is a very special event that is near and dear to so many of our staff and volunteers,” CDTC Executive Director Dr. Ana Calderon Randazzo said in a statement. “We are so grateful to be able to deliver holiday cheer to so many of our families who are in more need than ever this year.”

Title sponsors of this year’s event were Ira and Penny Vernon. Other sponsors were Associates MD, Clear Health Alliance, Simply Healthcare, and the Martin Youngstrom Foundation.

“With so many families in our community in need at this time, we couldn’t imagine the possibility the event might not happen,” Ira, who is a member of the CDTC Board of Directors, said in a statement. “When the staff announced plans to adjust the volunteer event to meet social distancing guidelines, we were proud to lend our support so the center’s clients could receive a special holiday meal.”

The not-for-profit Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center, a facility of Broward Health, has a mission to provide comprehensive prevention, intervention and treatment services for children with special healthcare needs. It serves nearly 11,000 clients every year, according to the organization.
