PEMBROKE PINES — A man — shot while naked in public — is in critical condition, and the person who admitted to pulling the trigger is in custody, according to Pembroke Pines police.

The shooting happened about 8:45 a.m. Wednesday outside the Sunshine Garden Apartments at 6840 Pembroke Road, just southeast of North Perry Airport.

Destiny Williams has lived in the complex about one month but says she’s ready to move out after the naked man knocked at her door about 15 minutes before being shot.

“He was knocking on doors and when you open it he was like, ‘You want some of this?’ pointing to his private area,” she said. “That was crazy.”

Police were sent to the area after several people called 911 to report a naked man walking between the 6800 and 7200 blocks of Pembroke Road.

As officers were en route, additional 911 calls reported a shooting.

Police arrived to find a naked man on the ground and bleeding. Fire Rescue determined the man had a gunshot wound. He was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital with life-threatening bullet wounds.

A short time later, a man claiming to be the shooter called 911, said Pembroke Pines police Major Al Xiques.

“He wanted to surrender himself to police,” Xiques said of the self-confessed suspect. “He was detained by police and is being questioned.”

The identities of the naked man and the alleged shooter were not disclosed Wednesday.

Boris Ovrugsky, owner of the Sunshine Gardens Apartments, said he got a call from detectives Wednesday morning telling him about the shooting outside his building.

“I wasn’t present there,” he said. “I had a detective call me and tell me that somebody was running around naked, not from the community, but from outside, and someone from the apartments shot him.”

According to Ovrugsky, the victim was “knocking on the door naked, and then someone shot him.”

The doors to each unit in the two-story apartment complex open onto outdoor breezeways. Residents said the naked man was running through the complex carrying a Bible.

“I’ve never seen him before,” said Williams. “He doesn’t live here. I don’t know why the hell he’d be running around with no clothes on.”

The motive for the shooting, as well as why the shooting victim was naked, is not yet known, according to police.
