FORT LAUDERDALE — Calvary Christian made sure it didn’t lose to Santa Fe Catholic this time.

Carl Cherenfant scored nine of his 15 points in the first half to lead a balanced attack as the Eagles pulled away to beat the Hawks 75-58 to advance to Class 3A State Semifinals.

“This is what we prepared for, but the job is not done yet,” said Calvary coach Cilk McSweeney on his team advancing to Lakeland. “I’m excited, but we still have a couple more steps to knock out.”

Calvary, who lost to Sante Fe in the regional semifinals last year, never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 20-6 lead and eventually a 36-17 halftime lead.

The Hawks did their best to keep it close, cutting the lead to 48-31 with 1:39 left in the third, but Calvary scored the next 12 points, highlighted by Taylor Hendricks’ dunk and the rout was on with the Eagles leading 60-31 with 6:45 remaining.

Greg Glenn finished with 14 points, while Dylan Canoville and Hendricks each added 12.

“This win means alot, especially since it’s my last year,” said Canoville. “It’s very emotional... I was on the bench tearing up a little bit, I’m just grateful.”

Calvary will face the Miami Country Day/Archbishop Carroll winner in the state semifinals on March 3, with the championship game being played March 5 at 4:30 p.m.

“We know that if we play our brand of basketball, we’ll be hard to beat,” added McSweeney. “Being able to make that extra pass, getting your teammate involved and whoever has the better shot to take it. They’ve been buying into it and making our team not only fun to coach, but harder for teams to guard.”
