KELVIN LEERDAM

Seattle Sounders FC, helping the team win one MLS

Cup (2019) and three Western Conference (2017, 2019, 2020) titles. The attacking right back made more than 100 appearance­s with Seattle, tallying 10 goals and 12 assists in his tenure with the team. Before his time in MLS, Leerdam spent the first nine seasons of his career with Feyenoord (2008-13) and SBV Vitesse (2013-17) in the Eredivisie — the first division in the Netherland­s. Miami acquired his right of first refusal from Seattle in exchange for $50,000 in 2021 and 2022.

BLAISE MATUIDI

Midfielder, No. 8 Age: 34

Came aboard: Signed using Targeted Allocation Money in

August 2020

About: Matuidi, who is the only current World Cup winner in the league, scored one goal in the 16 contests he played in last year. Matuidi helped the French national team win the World Cup in 2018, competing in four of the team’s seven matches. The two-way midfielder most recently played for Italy’s Juventus, where he helped the club win three Serie A titles, before coming to the MLS. Along with his time with Juventus (2017-20), Matuidi spent tenures with France’s Paris Saint-Germain (2011-17), SaintÉtien­ne (2007-11) and Troyes (2004-07).

JOSH PENN

Midfielder, No. 16 Age: 21

Came aboard: Selected No. 10 in 2021 SuperDraft

About: Penn played college soccer for Indiana in 2019, racking up six goals and two assists during the 22 games he competed in. The winger signed a United Soccer League academy contract with Indy Eleven later that year, making five appearance­s for the USL Championsh­ip club. The Naperville, Ill., native signed his first profession­al contract with Indy Eleven in August 2020 when the college soccer season was in jeopardy because of COVID-19. The contract was mutually terminated after Miami drafted Penn.

PATRICK SEAGRIST

Defender, No. 15 Age: 23

Came aboard: Traded to Miami from New York Red Bulls in December 2020

About: The No. 10 pick of the 2020 SuperDraft primarily saw action at left back, starting three games for the New York Red Bulls last season. Seagrist was traded from the Red Bulls in exchange for a third-round pick at the 2021 SuperDraft. The Red Bulls could receive up to $50,000 if performanc­e-based incentives are met. Seagrist will join USL Championsh­ip side Indy Eleven on a season-long loan. Seagrist, who’s from Streamwood, Ill., played his college ball at Marquette, earning all-Big East first team honors in 2018 and 2019.

VICTOR ULLOA

Midfielder, No. 13 Age: 29

Came aboard: Traded to Miami from FC Cincinnati in November 2019

About: Ulloa picked up two assists in the 24 games he appeared in last season. Before arriving in Miami, the defensive midfielder played for FC Cincinnati (2019) and FC Dallas (2011-18). Ulloa, who is a Mexico native, was the first FC Dallas Homegrown player to play more than 2,000 minutes in a season when he recorded 2,365 in 2014. Miami acquired Ulloa as well as the No. 1 pick in Stage One of the 2019 MLS Re-Entry Draft from Cincinnati in exchange for $50,000, a third-round pick in the 2020 SuperDraft and the No. 26 pick in Stage One of the Re-Entry Draft.

CHRISTIAN MAKOUN

Defender, No. 4 Age: 21

Came aboard: Transferre­d from Zamora FC and signed as a free agent in August 2019

About: The defensive midfielder and center back was loaned to Fort Lauderdale CF — the club’s USL League One team — in September 2020. Makoun only appeared in four games during the 2020 season for Miami. Before being acquired by Venezuela’s Zamora FC, Makoun spent one season on loan for Juventus’ U-23 team. The Venezuela native scored three goals in his 21 appearance­s for Juventus.

JOHN MCCARTHY

Goalkeeper, No. 1 Age: 29

Came aboard: Signed as a free agent in December 2019 About: The Philadelph­ia native became Miami’s regular starter down the stretch of the 2020 season after Luis Robles was sidelined with an injury. In his first season with the club, McCarthy tallied a 65.5 save percentage, 19 saves and one clean sheet in the nine contests he played in. McCarthy, who was a four-year starter at La Salle in Pennsylvan­ia, played four seasons (2015-18) with the Philadelph­ia Union before coming over to Miami.

RODOLFO PIZARRO

Midfielder, No. 10 Age: 27

Came aboard: Transferre­d from CF Monterrey on a Designated Player contract in February 2020

About: Pizarro competed in 20 matches last season, finishing tied for second on the team in goals (4) and placing second in assists (4). The attacking midfielder most recently played for CF Monterrey (2018-20) of Liga MX, where he helped them win Liga MX Apertura (2019) and CONCACAF Champions League titles (2019). The Mexico native also played for C.D. Guadalajar­a (2017-18). During his time with C.D. Guadalajar­a, he went on to win the Liga MX Clausura (2017), Copa MX Clausura (2017) and CONCACAF Champions League (2018) titles.

RYAN SHAWCROSS

Defender, No. 17 Age: 34

Came aboard: Signed as a free transfer in February 2021 About: Shawcross made more than 450 appearance­s with Stoke City (2008-21), leading the club to the FA

Cup Final in 2011 and helping them get promoted to the Premier League entering the 2008-09 season. The former Stoke City captain was one of the longest-tenured players on the club after permanentl­y transferri­ng from Manchester United in January 2008. Occupying an internatio­nal roster spot, the center back spent his youth career with Manchester United (2002-06) before being moved up to the club’s first team in 2006.

FELIPE VALENCIA

Midfielder, No. 25 Age: 16

Came aboard: Signed a Homegrown contract in December 2020

About: Valencia became the first Inter Miami CF Academy graduate to join the first team and the 15th-youngest player in MLS history to sign a contract. Before signing his contract with Miami, the Homestead native spent one season with Fort Lauderdale CF. The winger made history with Fort Lauderdale by becoming the youngest player to score a goal at any USL level at just 15 years, five months and 18 days. He broke current FC Bayern Munich standout Alphonso Davies’ previous record. Valencia recorded three goals in the 12 appearance­s he made for Fort Lauderdale.

NICK MARSMAN

Goalkeeper, No. TBA Age: 30

Came aboard: Signed as a free agent in April 2021 About: Marsman, who will join the club in July, comes to Miami following his two-year tenure with Feyenoord Rotterdam in the Eredivisie — the first division in the Netherland­s. The Dutch native has made 136 Eredivisie appearance­s, spending time with FC Twente (2011-12; 2013-17), FC Utrecht (2017-19) and FC Feyenoord (201921) since making his league debut in 2011. Currently, Marsman is Feyenoord’s first-choice goalkeeper, having made 25 appearance­s while tallying 10 clean sheets. Marsman will occupy an internatio­nal roster slot.

LEWIS MORGAN

Midfielder, No. 7 Age: 25

Came aboard: Signed from Celtic Football Club in

January 2020

About: Potentiall­y the club’s MVP in 2020, Morgan led Miami in goals (5) and assists (5). Before MLS, Morgan made 31 appearance­s for Celtic, including matches in the Champions League as well as the UEFA Europa League. The winger has received two seniors call-ups for Scotland, debuting in an internatio­nal friendly against Peru in 2018. The Scotland native appeared in another friendly against Mexico a few days later.

ROBBIE ROBINSON

Forward, No. 19 Age: 23

Came aboard: Selected No. 1 in 2020 SuperDraft

About: The former MAC Hermann Trophy winner made four starts in the 12 games he competed in last season. Robinson, who’s from Camden, S.C., finished the 2019 season as joint top scorer in NCAA Division I for Clemson with 18 goals and placed in the top 10 in the country with nine assists. The standout striker was named a first-team all-American as well as the ACC Offensive Player of the Year. Robinson registered 24 goals and 10 assists in his short collegiate career.

BREK SHEA

Defender/Midfielder, No. 20 Age: 31

Came aboard: Re-signed in December 2020 after being acquired as a free agent in June 2020

About: Shea tied for second on the team in goals (4) last season, making six starts in 13 appearance­s. Before joining the club, the wing back suffered a long-term knee injury in 2019 while playing for Atlanta United and rehabbed at Miami’s training facility. Shea — a 2011 MLS All-Star — has also spent tenures with Vancouver Whitecaps FC (2017-18), Orlando City SC (2015-16) and FC Dallas (2008-12). The College Station, Texas, native has made 34 senior U.S. men’s national team appearance­s, helping the squad win the Gold Cup Championsh­ip against Panama in 2013.

PHIL NEVILLE

Head coach Age: 44

Came aboard: Hired Jan. 18 by former Manchester United teammate and Inter Miami president and co-owner David Beckham.

About: The Bury, England, native won six Premier League titles, three FA Cups and the UEFA Champions League during a long career with Manchester United (1994-2005), then moved on to Everton, for whom he served as team captain, on a five-year contract. He became head coach of the England women’s national team in 2018, leading the Lionesses to the semifinals of the 2019 Women’s World Cup, where they lost to the United States, 2-1.
