HOLLYWOOD — Miramar senior running back Desmond Reid lived up to his moniker and scored four first-half touchdowns to stake the Patriots to a 34-0 lead and coasted to the District 15-7A victory on Friday night.

Reid, who earned the nickname “Flash” by his teammates, scored on runs of 28, 23, and 18 yards and added a 52-yard scoring reception to give Miramar (5-2, 3-0) its fifth straight win. He finished the game with eight carries for 106 yards, all in the first half.

“Nobody can catch me once I get to the second level,” Reid said. “I’m gone. We practice hard and my teammates and coaches make me better. At the beginning of the year, we were trying to find what we do best and we put everybody in the right position. If everybody stays in the right mind, we can win states easy.”

Tempers from both teams flared on the final play of the first half when there was a late hit out of bounds against Miramar. No players were ejected.

Miramar coach A.J. Scott expected a hard-fought game.

“I am proud of Desmond “Flash” Reid,” Scott said. “He flashed four times for four scores and I am happy for the kid. I did not underestimate McArthur. I am a class of ’96 Mustang and I knew they would give me everything they had. We told the kids to be smart. We have a long season still. We didn’t want them to do anything stupid that would end their season.”

Miramar took the opening kickoff and marched 58 yards in just four plays, capped by a 28-yard scoring run by Reid. The big play on the drive was a 37-yard completion from T.J. Delaney to Tre’

Rigby.

On the ensuing series, McArthur (3-3, 0-2) had a problem with the center exchange, losing 24 yards total on back-to-back plays and giving the Patriots the ball on the Mustangs’ 12-yard line. Two plays later, Delaney hit senior Marcus Murray with a 7-yard scoring toss to push the lead to 13-0 with 6:22 remaining in the first quarter.

The poor snaps continued and gave Miramar good field position at the Mustangs’ 49 when punter Gerald Hernandez had his knee touch the ground for an 11-yard loss trying to retrieve the bad snap. Delaney hit Jeremiah Santel for a 26-yard gain and Reid did the rest on a 23-yard run.

Reid picked up his third TD of the first half as Miramar capitalized on a short punt and Reid scored three plays later on an 18-yard run. His final TD of the came on a catch-and-run from Delaney from 52 yards out with 10 seconds left before halftime.

On the ensuing kickoff, McArthur’s Kymani Fleurme was run out of bounds and hit late by a Miramar defender which prompted pushing and shoving from both teams who had to be separated by the coaches. The second half was played with a running clock.

Miramar pushed the lead to 41-0 on a 30-yard scoring toss from Delaney to Rigby. Delaney completed 10 of 15 passes for 160 yards and three scores.

Miramar is getting hot at the right time after dropping its opening two games. Miramar fell to Miami Killian and Dillard in their first two games, but rallied to defeat South Broward, North Miami, Stranahan, and Hallandale prior to Friday’s contest. Miramar was 3-2 last season.
