Harold E. Patricoff Jr. and Jake Baccari have joined Duane Morris LLP as partners in the firm’s trial practice group in Miami. Previously, Patricoff and Baccari were partners at Shutts & Bowen LLP.

The Florida Bar recognized lawyers with Pro Bono Awards, for their work on behalf of low-income and disadvanta­ged clients, at a Jan. 20 ceremony, at the Supreme Court of Florida. They include from South Florida: Steven Kellough, Ryan C. Tyler, Rich

ard A. Malafy and Morgan L. Weinstein.

, Tremaine L. Hemans received the 2022 Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division Pro Bono Service Award. The award recognizes public service or legal aid performed by a lawyer who is 35 or younger or who has not practiced for more than five years.

The United States District Court, Southern District of Florida, announced that

Melissa Damian has been selected by the Court’s District Judges to be appointed United States Magistrate Judge. Damian will fill the magistrate judgeship position vacated upon the retirement of Chief United States Magistrate Judge John J. O’Sullivan. Since 2010, Damian has been practicing law in private practice, specializi­ng in civil appeals and complex federal litigation, most recently as Of Counsel to the law firm Damian & Valori, Culmo Trial Partners in Miami.

Bilzin Sumberg has elected seven attorneys as the firm’s newest partners: John V. Chibbaro, Paul J. D’Alessandro Jr., Misbah Farid, Michael C. Larmoyeux Jr., Alexander G. Leon, Lindsey Zohn Parker

The Freedom Waters Foundation announced that Robin Meagher and

Marissa Stoneking recently joined the organizati­on. Meagher was named director of programs and developmen­t for the Florida east coast, based in Fort Lauderdale. Previously, Meagher was the chief operating officer for The Triton, a profession­al yachting magazine in Fort Lauderdale. Stoneking is administra­tive assistant in the main office in Naples.

Audra Berg has been appointed president and chief executive officer of The Jewish Federation of Broward County. In the past, Berg worked for the Jewish United Fund/ Jewish Federation of Metropolit­an Chicago as vice president, leadership engagement. The Diabetes Research Institute Foundation recently appointed Scarlett Leung, chief executive officer and co-founder of Sugarbreak, and Matthew Stubbs, managing partner at Duncan Stubbs, PLLC, to its national board of directors.

Community Foundation of Broward has named four new members to its board of directors. They are: Jonathan K. Allen, director of Broward County’s water and wastewater services business operations division; Judy B. Bonevac, of Judy Barringer Bonevac, P.A.; Burnadette Norris

Weeks, partner in the law firm of Austin Pamies Norris Weeks Powell PLLC; and

Patrick M. Fisher has been appointed as the new vice president and managing director of the Fontainebl­eau Miami Beach.

Health, wellness

Families First of Palm Beach County announced the promotion of Melissa Wijngaarde to the maternal and infant mental health director position. Wijngaarde joined in October 2019 after 15 years at the University of Miami’s Linda Ray Interventi­on Center, where she focused on child parent psychother­apy, as a treatment provider, supervisor, and trainer within the Dependency Court system.

Broward Health Medical Center announced Lester R. Eljaiek as its regional chief financial officer. Eljaiek will lead the financial operations of the Fort Lauderdale hospital and Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital. Previously, Eljaiek has worked as senior vice president of finance of Lifespan Health System in Providence, Rhode Island. He also was vice president of finance at Sentara Healthcare in Norfolk, Va.

Education

Dr. John Kelly, president of Florida Atlantic University, recently appointed Dr. Peter

Cruise, executive director of the LeRoy Collins Public Ethics Academy and Affiliate Professor in the School of Public Administra­tion, to serve another four-year term as the university’s faculty representa­tive on the Palm Beach County Commission on Ethics.
