Arrest made in attempted murder case

A man accused of shooting another man in Pompano Beach in December was arrested following a pursuit in Georgia, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said Friday.

Otis Washington, 27, of Fort Lauderdale, was arrested Wednesday in Clayton County in Georgia on a warrant and is facing one count of first-degree attempted murder, the Sheriff’s Office said. He will be extradited to Broward County.

Washington allegedly shot another man near the 1400 block of Northwest 31st Avenue in Pompano Beach about 3:30 a.m. Dec. 31, 2021, during an argument involving multiple people, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies at the scene of the shooting began life-saving attempts until Pompano Beach Fire Rescue arrived. He was taken to a local hospital. The Sheriff’s Office did not provide any updated information on the victim’s condition Friday.

The victim’s name is withheld under Marsy’s Law, a 2018 voter approved constitutional amendment that allows victims of crimes to shield their names and identifying information from the public.

Court records show Washington was arrested on Jan. 1 this year, a month after the shooting, on weapon and drug related charges. A probable cause affidavit from January said a Fort Lauderdale Police officer saw a car he recognized was recently in a be-on-the-lookout alert for being used in a homicide where Washington was the suspect.

He was found with cash, marijuana and cocaine on him and a loaded gun in a cupholder in his car, the affidavit said. Sheriff’s Office homicide detectives carried out several search warrants in reference to the homicide case after the arrest.

Washington was released from jail on Jan. 2 after posting bond, court records show. By Jan. 20, the Sheriff’s Office released a photo of Washington and said in a news release they were trying to find him.

The Sheriff’s Office again asked for the public’s help in finding Washington in late August before his arrest this week.
