Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. has completed its acquisition of ultra-luxury brand Silversea Cruises, the companies announced Wednesday.

Miami-based Royal Caribbean said it closed on its bid to buy a two-thirds stake of Silversea after securing approval from regulators. The acquisition “unites two leading players in the cruise industry and fills out RCL’s portfolio of cruise brands across all key market segments,” according to a news release.

Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio, whose father Antonio Lefebvre d’Ovidio founded Silversea in Monaco in 1994, will remain executive chairman of Silversea and retain a 33.3 percent stake, the release said.

The companies commemorated the deal by announcing an enhancement initiative called Project Invictus, described as a multiyear, fleet-wide effort to upgrade Silversea’s cruise products through ship improvements and enhanced onboard features.

Among the enhancements will be upgraded champagne and caviar offerings on the Silver Muse beginning Aug. 19; renovations to Silver Whisper in December that will include a partial refit of all guest cabins; and enhanced dry docks for Silver Wind and Silver Shadow.

With the acquisition of Silversea’s nine-ship fleet, Royal Caribbean’s fleet now numbers 15 vessels, with another 15 on order, the company said.

Royal Caribbean Cruises also owns and operates Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Club Cruises.
