Teen Tech Cen­ter wave hits South Florida

HANDY’s new Teen Tech Cen­ter at 501 NE Eighth St. in Fort Laud­erdale will have its grand open­ing on Wed­nes­day, Aug. 29 at 4 p.m.

The Club­house Net­work and BestBuy have teamed up to es­tab­lish these teen tech cen­ters all over the coun­try, in cities such as Los An­ge­les, Oak­land Park, Chicago, Min­neapo­lis, New Or­leans, San An­to­nio and Wash­ing­ton, D.C.

“We ap­plied for the grant last sum­mer, so the whole process took about year,” said HANDY Teen Tech Co­or­di­na­tor Alana Ash­ley.

From 2 to 6 p.m. Mon­day through Fri­days, teens ages 12 to 19 can ex­plore graphic de­sign, an­i­ma­tion, gam­ing, HANDY re­cently opened its new Teen Tech Cen­ter where youth ages 12 to 19 can ex­plore dif­fer­ent STEAM dis­ci­plines from 2 to 6 p.m. Mon­day through Fri­day.

“Ev­ery now and then we

will bring in a men­tor with a par­tic­u­lar skillset to work with kids,” Ash­ley said, adding that those in­ter­ested in vol­un­teer­ing do not need to be STEAM ex­perts. “We’re

ask­ing for a com­mit­ment of one day a week for six months.”
