Raising awareness about senior move managers

- By Cindy Kent Staff writer

Sharon Cofar, founder and president of Coral Springs-based A Move Made Easy Inc., was recently elected to the board of directors of the National Association of Senior Move Managers. The organization supports the professional development of senior move managers throughout the world with educational programs and resources.

On the board

Why join this board: I’m committed to my profession. Senior Move Management is in its infancy and I want to affect the growth and expansion of this industry and raise the level of awareness with the public and the standards to which we work.

Why it matters: NASMM ensures that those calling themselves Senior Move Managers are competent, qualified, vetted and follow the SMM code of ethics.

Why the community should care: Our national organization sets standards and criteria to become a Senior Move Manager. This title is trademarked to be used only by those who have been vetted by our national association in order to protect the senior and their family. By hiring member companies, the client is protected from unscrupulous people who might want to take advantage of them.

Advice to young professionals seeking community engagement: You’re helping others, but you’re also building your respect and reputation as a giver, as a person who cares. SHARON COFAR

On the job

What I do: I am the founder and president of A Move Made Easy Inc. — we are not movers — we are Senior Move Managers or Relocation Specialists. We handle all details of a senior’s transition from beginning to end: sorting and downsizing, packing, scheduling and overseeing the mover, to unpacking and organizing their new residence. We dispose of unwanted items by sales to an auctioneer or consignment shop or though donation to a charity, stage the former residence and get it ready for sale. We also help with estate closure.

Professional development :I served on the NASMM Board for a three-year stint in 2003. I am also currently on the Board of ESRN (Elder Services Resource Network), a local organization that provides information and resources to help seniors.

Industry wisdom: is always right. The customer
