8 hot things to do in South Florida in September

- By Rod Stafford Hagwood Staff writer rhagwood@southflorida.com

September is full of fun events in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and elsewhere in South Florida. Check out this list.

Sept. 4 — Bourbon from the angels

It’s time to wet your whiskey. City Cellar Wine Bar and Grill in West Palm Beach is teaming up with Angel’s Envy Bourbon Whiskey for a four-course Bourbon and Bites Pairing Dinner. And if you feel overly indulgent wolfing down pan-seared scallops with pumpkin puree and bacon-lavender jam, coffee-rubbed Wagyu short ribs and confit duck with black garlic-cherry barbecue sauce — not to mention a full lineup of Angel’s Envy craft cocktails and neat pours — just remember the whole thing is also for a good cause. For the fifth year, Angel’s Envy will have what the Louisville, Ky., company calls “Toasting the Trees,” where a tree is planted for every drink image shared during September with the hashtag #ToastTheTrees. This is to ensure that there are enough oak barrels in the future to age the bourbon. Bourbon and Bites starts 6:30 p.m. Sept. 4 at City Cellar, 700 Rosemary Ave., in West Palm Beach (in CityPlace). Admission is $75 per person. To reserve seating, call 561-366-0071. For more information, go to CityCellarWPB.com.

Sept. 8 — Get a sneak peek of Miami’s art season for free

Many of the major players in Miami’s performing-arts scene will appear at ArtsLaunch2018. The annual event, held at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Miami, kicks off the upcoming season. This year’s ArtsLaunch will feature performances from pop rock-reggae band Jahfe, Latin funk band Locos por Juana and DJ Kumi along with workshops, minishows, staged readings and film screenings. The best part? It’s totally free. ArtsLaunch2018 will take place from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Arsht Center, 1300 Biscayne Blvd., in Miami. For more information, go to ArshtCenter.org.

Sept. 8 — Drag races on the runway

Admit it: You watch “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” don’t you? It’s camp-tastic, isn’t it? Well, if you want to see some of the performers from Season 10 of the drag-alicious television competition/reality show with a bit of weekly faux-femme fracas thrown in for good measure, then you have to check out female impersonators from the show when they hit Fort Lauderdale. “War on the Catwalk” will feature Miz Cracker, Monet X Change, Miss Vanjie (if you want to fit in, get ready to scream that name. Don’t ask why. Just do it), Monique Heart, Dusty Ray Bottoms, Blair St. Clair and the Vixen. “War on the Catwalk” will “Nick Cannon Presents: Wild ‘N Out Live” will go on stage at 8 p.m. Sept. 14 at AmericanAirlines Arena, 601 Biscayne Blvd., in Miami.

take place Sept. 8 at Parker Playhouse, 707 NE Eighth St., in Fort Lauderdale (in Holiday Park). Tickets cost $23.24 and $56.77. There are VIP tickets for $157.56 that get you premium seating and admission to a preshow meet and greet. To order, call 954-462-0222 or go to ParkerPlayhouse.com.

Sept. 14 — Nick Cannon is one up with the putdown

“Wild ‘N Out,” the MTV game show where Nick Cannon’s friends take turns dissing one another is coming to Miami and, yes, if the TV version is anything like the stage version, things will escalate quickly. Expect Cannon to take some Mariah hits, which is a brutal bullet he gets struck with repeatedly on the television series. “Nick Cannon Presents: Wild ‘N Out Live” will start 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14 at AmericanAirlines Arena, 601 Biscayne Blvd., in Miami. Tickets cost $31-$395 (VIP package with preshow meet and greet and post-show party). Go to AAArena.com.

Sept. 21 — All up in the Miami Dolphins’ Grill

The Gridiron Grill-Off Competition, in which South Florida celebrity chefs team up with NFL stars in a battle of the barbecue, isn’t until Nov. 10. But you can get an early snap (see what we did there?) when former Miami Dolphins player Channing Crowder hosts a special cooking class as part of the Aprons program at Publix.

Crowder, an avid fisherman, will highlight some great locally available seafood on the menu. The hands-on class will start 6:30 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Publix located at 1181 S. University Drive, in Plantation. The entry fee is $50. To register, go to Publix.com/ Recipes-Planning/Aprons-CookingSchools/Plantation/Classes.

Sept. 21-22 — Drake and his Three Migos

The “Aubrey and the Three Migos Tour” lands in Miami for two nights. The Canadian rapper Drake (whose full name is Aubrey Drake Graham, hence the tour title) and American hip-hop trio Migos are two of the hottest acts in the music world, so expect them to blow the roof off AmericanAirlines Arena. The two teamed up for the song “Walk It Talk It” in March, so that collaboration is definitely on the set list, as are hits from Drake’s record-breaking album “Scorpion.” “Aubrey and the Three Migos Tour” starts 7 p.m. Sept. 21 and Sept. 22 at AmericanAirlines Arena,

601 Biscayne Blvd., in Miami. Tickets cost

$75-$595 (VIP package with preshow Migos meet and greet). Go to AAArena.com.

Sept. 27 — Elvis puts the wow in Luau

As if you really needed an excuse to go full tiki-holic at the famous Mai-Kai Restaurant. The place is a monument to Polynesian kitsch, and if the decor, rumsoaked retro cocktails and dance-happy dinner shows weren’t enough — and really,

shouldn’t they be? — the Fort Lauderdale institution is now throwing Elvis Presley at you. That’s right, the Pelvis will be there in spirit via tribute artist Dan Cunningham, who will headline “The Blue Hawaii Elvis Luau” with Hawaiian songs and rock ’n’ roll on Sept. 27 at 8 p.m. The Mai-Kai is located at 3599 N. Federal Highway, in Fort Lauderdale. Admission is $15 in addition to the cost of your dinner. For more information, call 954-563-3272 or go to MaiKai.com.

Sept. 29 — Walk this way

The last Saturday of every month means it’s time for one of South Florida’s hottest events, the Flagler Art Walk in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The events take place in the neighboring warehouse districts of FAT Village and Flagler Village. This time around, there will be a don’t-miss-it, immersive virtual and actual art installation in the Ora Flagler Village Apartments. Artist Stephanie Melissa will create nine walk-through vignettes, ranging from a neon-desert landscape to a cotton-candy land. And, yes, selfies are encouraged. Admission is free. The Ora Flagler Village Apartments are located at 673 NE Third Ave., in Fort Lauderdale. For more information on the Flagler Art Walk, go to FATVillage.com.
