Last week we commemorated the 17th anniversary of the 9⁄11 tragedy. When we remember the thousands of lives that were taken that day and the first responders who rushed in to help, many of whom died from illnesses related to their work, I am also reminded of how unified we were as a country and a people. When we promise to never forget, may we never forget those we lost, and may we choose to be the helpers, to be our best and to see the best in others every day not just during times of tragedy.

September 10 was World Suicide Prevention Day. Suicidal thoughts are almost always the result of untreated depression and/or anxiety. Mood and anxiety disorders are exceedingly common. So are all mental health conditions. The thing is—we have to pay attention. When a family member, friend or colleague seems “not like their usual self;” go ahead and ask them— "what’s going on?” Ask them how they are feeling, and if you are really concerned, ask them if they have thoughts about suicide. If the answer is yes, get them help. There’s the Crisis Text Line, nationally; and there’s Henderson Behavioral Health, right here.

America has spoken. And it’s not pretty. No, this isn’t about our broken political system. It’s about our taste (or lack of it)! With all due respect to Taco Bell (Yes, I enjoy a nice, greasy Burrito Supreme as much as the next guy), but according to a recent Harris Poll, its America’s best Mexican restaurant. Open your eyes, Yelp, ask someone, but I guarantee, there’s an authentic Mexican restaurant, minutes from you. (Casa Maya in Deerfield Beach is my choice). I once took my friend from Cancun into Taco Bell and he didn’t know what kind of food it was.

California, following Hawaii, passed a law committing to 100 percent net zerocarbon emissions by 2045. The goal: 100 percent of its power from clean sources. The law also requires energy providers to rely on renewable sources: 50 percent by 2026 and 60 percent by 2030. While the United States has abandoned the commitments of the Paris Agreement on climate, states, counties and municipalities continue to advance towards clean energy to reduce greenhouse gases. Florida has 1,350 miles of coastline, second only to Alaska. It is time for the Sunshine State to commit to 100 percent net zero-carbon emissions by 2045.
