South Florida Sun-Sentinel (Sunday)
October brings frights, cool art, much more
Here is our monthly insider’s guide to events in South Florida from Miami to Delray Beach.
Oct. 4-Nov. 2 — Stage fright
There may be groups out there that love the macabre as much as Infinite Abyss Production, but few are willing to commit enough to the horror genre to put on live theatrical horror shows. Just in time for Halloween comes the Wilton Manors-based company’s “Theatre of Terror,” a riff on the 1973 Vincent Price movie “Theatre of Blood.” The chiller is about an actor who offs the critic who killed his career. But this is no traditional play. The hour-long show is an immersive staging where only 25 audience members move around the venue following the story. Think of it as a haunted house with a focused narrative. “Theatre of Terror” runs Oct. 4-Nov. 3 at the Wilton Theater Factory (formerly the Abyss Theatre), 2306 N. Dixie Highway, Wilton Manors. Showtimes are 7:30 and
9:30 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Tickets cost $25. To order, go to Infinite-Abyss.org.
Oct. 5 — Cool artwalk
(as in air-conditioned)
The Delray Traditional ArtWalk is done right. That is to say it is indoors, which is no small thing here in the subtropics. The event will feature more than 75 artists spread out over 11,00 square feet at the Art of Delray Gallery. The best part? Admission and parking are free. But you must RSVP — no exceptions — at LivingFla.Eventbrite.com. The ArtWalk takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 5. The gallery is located at 1440 N. Federal Highway, in Delray Beach.
Oct. 6 — Giuliana and Bill Rancic go all wellness at the W
The first couple of the E! network, the Rancics will be the keynote speakers at the health and wellness retreat Thrive South Florida. The stars of the reality show “Giuliana and Bill,” on which they opened up about their battles with cancer and infertility, will present a talk titled “Overcoming and Conquering Life’s Challenges at All Stages of Life.” Thrive will also feature demonstrations, interactive sessions and speakers on topics such as stress management, energy healing, healthy eating, yoga, medita-
tion and alternative medicines. Full disclosure: Thrive South Florida is sponsored by the South Florida Sun Sentinel and parent company Tronc. The retreat will be held at the W hotel, 401 N. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd., in Fort Lauderdale, Admission is $75 and $150. To order tickets, go to AWeekendToThrive.com.
Oct. 11, 13, 20 — Panthers prowl pucks
The Florida Panthers hockey team has three games this month at the BB&T Center. First up is the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday, Oct. 11 (opening night with a $5 beer promotion). Next will be the Vancouver Canucks Saturday, Oct. 13. Then, it’s the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday, Oct. 20. The BB&T Center is located at 1 Panther Parkway in Sunrise. All games start at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $20-$400 (VIP package). To order, go to TheBBTCenter.com.
Oct. 12 — South American soccer comes to North America
They say it’s a “friendly,” but let’s not kid ourselves. The national soccer teams of Peru and Chile, both neighboring countries and longtime rivals, didn’t travel all the way from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean to just kick the ball around and play nice. This South Florida soccer showdown is the latest of a rivalry stretching back to
1935. It even has a name: Clásico del Pacífico. Littleknown fact: Both teams claim to have invented the bicycle kick. The match starts at 8 p.m. at Hard Rock Stadium, 347 Don Shula Drive, in Miami Gardens. Tickets cost
$45-$375 (Club Living Room Boxes). To order, call
1-800-745-3000 or go to HardRockStadium.com.
Oct. 14 — Light it up at the Imagination Ball
Families will enjoy this kid-friendly benefit that was created three years ago to introduce children to the performing arts at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Miami. The afternoon will feature a light-and-dance show by iLuminate, finalists on the NBC competition series “America’s Got Talent.” The troupe, which performs in glow-in-the-dark costumes on a darkened stage, has also appeared on “The X Factor,” “Dancing With the Stars,” as well as the American Music Awards, the BET Awards, the Billboard Awards and MTV’s Video Music Awards. There will also be interactive activities and a lunch buffet. The fundraiser is for the center’s education and community programs. The event starts at 2 p.m. at the Arsht Center, 1300 Biscayne Blvd., in Miami. Single tickets cost $500. Tables of
10 cost $5,000, $10,000 and
$15,000. To order, call
786-468-2020 or go to ArshtCenter.org/ imagination ball.
Oct. 14 — Da Dolphins play da Bears
Two great NFL franchises meet in the Magic City when the Miami Dolphins play the Chicago Bears. Will there be a repeat of that blowout loss against the Patriots? Kickoff is 1 p.m. at Hard Rock Stadium, 347 Don Shula
Drive, in Miami Gardens. Tickets cost $65-$385. To order, call 305-943-6678 or go to HardRockStadium.com.
Oct. 15 — Fear and loathing in Coral Springs
You may have come to South Florida to get away from the news. But you can bet that Bob Woodward, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, will be plenty entertaining when he gives a talk and takes questions from the audience as part of his national tour promoting his latest bestseller, “Fear: Trump in the White House.” The event will be moderated by WLRN’s vice president of news, Tom Hudson. The appearance starts at 7 p.m. at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts,
2855 Coral Springs Drive. Tickets cost $41.87-$94.87
($159 for VIP meet and greet tickets). To order, call
954-344-5990 or go to TheCenterCS.com.
Oct. 8, 10, 12, 20, 24, 27, 29 — Miami Heat ballers take on seven NBA teams
Even if you don’t follow basketball, there’s a good chance you’ve heard the names of the Miami Heat’s roster — Dwyane Wade, Udonis Haslem, Hassan Whiteside, Justise Winslow, Goran Dragic, Bam Adebayo. That’s how hot the Heat is. Here at home, preseason games include the Orlando Magic Oct. 8, the New Orleans Pelicans Oct. 10 and the Atlanta Hawks Oct. 12. The regular season has the Charlotte Hornets Oct. 20, the New York Knicks Oct. 24, the Portland Trailblazers Oct.
27 and the Sacramento Kings Oct. 29. Tip-offs are at 7:30 and 8 p.m. at American Airlines Arena,
601 Biscayne Blvd., in Miami.

Oct. 19 — Rockin’ out for a Thorogood cause
George Thorogood and the Destroyers will bring their bluesy boogie rock to the Pavilion at the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek for a concert that’s also a fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS).
