Buddy Guy to play at Broward Center

Blues-guitar icon Buddy Guy will perform March 22 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale on a tour supporting his critically lauded album “The Blues Is Alive and Well.”

Tickets for the concert are scheduled to go on sale 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at BrowardCenter.org and the Broward Center box office, 201 SW Fifth Ave., as well as all Ticketmaster outlets, including Ticketmaster.com and by calling 800-745-3000.

As if we needed any other reason, the death on Saturday of fellow Chicago guitar legend Otis Rush provided a reminder that Guy is one of the few remaining members of a generation of performers who defined the American art form known as the blues for the past halfcentury.

The 82-year-old Guy, who has watched friends such as Junior Wells, Muddy Waters, B.B. King and Howlin’ Wolf depart the stage for the final time, closes the title track of his new album by saying, “My friends said before they died, to keep the blues alive.”

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer continues to perform with abandon: Through the end of the year, Guy’s tour will include expected stops in the American South and Midwest, but also concerts in Ra’anana, Israel; Basel, Switzerland; Paris and Prague, before a Chicago concert to celebrate the Illinois Bicentennial on Dec. 3.
