In face of rising seas, retreat to what?

We hear a lot discussed about sea level rise and how we could adapt. Some go on further to say we can never adapt because of our low elevations. We see artists like Xavier Cortada asking us to even post our elevations with signs in front of our homes.

We see and hear cities and counties working to modify codes around the height of sea walls. What is this all for? Why should we care? There are those amongst us who say retreat is our only option, but retreat to what?

We will leave behind a muddy mess, a pool of toxic materials that will create a new type of brown field and super fund sites. We need to think through solutions that allow us to decline gracefully.

We can limit the decline to population decrease, infrastructure loss, and loss of current landscapes. Decline can still include a new economy.

Democrats are in favor of capitalism too

Your recent letter writer from Hollywood praised the president and capitalism but does he realize that we, Republicans and Democrats, also believe in capitalism as long as it is not abused?

We, the middle classes are paying for marshal protection for Betsy DeVos because she was heckled her second week in office at a middle school. Did Scott Pruitt ever pay back all that money spent on his bulletproof phone booth for his office, personalized pens, excessive airfare etc? Now the Secretary of the Interior is being investigated for excessive dealings as is the new acting Attorney General Matthew Whittaker.

Capitalism is good for all classes of people, but why should this president and his family supposedly reap so many rewards while he is serving this wonderful country. He was supposed to drain the swamp but not be part of it!!

‘Free ride’ letter highlights ignorance

Thank you, Mr. Walter, for your letter to the editor. You have very concisely portrayed the ignorance and lack of knowledge of many Trump supporters regarding our country, the world, and our society as a whole.

You ended "If you want to live in Socialism, go live in the USSR." The USSR ended in 1991, at the same time Trump was a Democrat, favored birth control and abortions, and opposed the conservative Republican party.

Trump is a political opportunist, and you all have bought into his self-promotion, and self-enrichment. Congratulations!
