Beach town has two of the top webcams in the world, report says
Smile, Lauderdale-by-theSea, your webcams were named among the “Top 25 Most Interesting” in the world.
That’s according to EarthCams’s 20th annual list for 2018. The New Jersey-based webcam network EarthCam considered a live cam’s “quality of image, uniqueness of content and overall technical achievements” in its global rankings.
Lauderdale-by-the-Sea has two web cams that went up in 2016. One sits on a beach pavilion at the east end of Commercial Boulevard and provides live snapshots of the sandy shoreline and Anglin’s Fishing Pier. The other cam faces west and streams views of Anglin’s Square, the town’s commercial strip at 12 Commercial Blvd.
“The town of Lauderdale-bythe-Sea was honored and excited to make EarthCam’s Top 25 list, especially considering we
were selected from among thousands of webcam nominees worldwide,” said Chris Vincent, the town’s mayor.
The only other Florida webcam that made EarthCam’s list was Zoo Miami’s Meerkat Cam which gives visitors close up views of the critters in their habitat.
The other winners included webcams at Bryant Park in New York City, the Arenal Observatory Volcano cam in Costa Rica and the Dublin Pub Cam in Ireland.
South Florida’s coastal cities including Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach and Deerfield Beach have become known for their web cams.
Out-of-state residents and tourists peek into them to get a sense of the sunny beach life and locals use them to check out the surf conditions. Port Everglades also has a popular live cam which streams views of the incoming and departing cruise ships.
