See art in motion in Boynton Beach
Here’s an insider guide to February events in MiamiDade, Broward and Palm Beach counties that you need to know about.
Feb. 1-3 — Art that will move you
If the idea of art just staying still being art-ish is boring to you, then the International Kinetic Art Exhibit and Symposium might be just your thing. In various downtown spaces in Boynton Beach now through September there are al fresco installations that are powered by solar, wind, water, gravity and human interaction. There are scheduled tours or you can just do it on your own. Download an app at Intl KineticArtEvent.org. While at the website, check out the information on the Feb. 1-3 symposium (there are lots of events that are free and open to the public). For more information on this biennial event, email ColesDobayD@bbfl.us or call 561-742-6026.
Feb. 7 — Rumming through the Mai-Kai
Rum master (yeah, that’s a thing) Ed Hamilton will host a rum tasting at Fort Lauderdale’s Mai-Kai Restaurant. Never heard of him? Well, the self-proclaimed “Minister of Rum” literally wrote the book, two in fact, on the distilled alcohol beverage and has his own label of rums. The tasting starts at 6 p.m. Admittance is $25 per person. There is limited seating, so RSVP before Feb. 4 by calling 954-563-3272, ext. 1. For more information, go to MaiKai.com.
Feb- 10 — Sensory Friendly Sunday
Two venues in SoFlo will host events designed for people on the autism spectrum or with other sensory integration sensitivities who might appreciate having the stimuli carefully managed.
Fort Lauderdale’s Broward Center for the Performing Arts will have a special performance of the “Boston Pops on Tour with Keith Lockhart: Lights, Camera … Music! Six Decades of John Williams” that will spotlight music from movie franchises such as “Star Wars,” “Harry Potter” and “Indiana Jones.” This performance will also have a separate room with a live feed where there will be music played at a lower volume, noise-cancelling headphones on-hand, lower lighting, a variety of seating options and fidget spinners. Families can bring snacks, blankets, pillows, etc.
The concert starts at 7 p.m. at the Broward Center, 201 SW Fifth Ave., in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are $5 for the sensory friendly room. Tickets for the auditorium are $25-$135 or $155 for the Club Level. For more information, go to BrowardCenter.org.
Additionally, Davie’s Young At Art Museum will continue its monthly Sensory Sunday series where the museum opens up an hour early at 10 a.m. for sensory-friendly activities. On Feb. 10 the theme will be “Love and Happiness.” Each visitor gets a “YAA for Last year's Pride Fort Lauderdale brought thousands to Fort Lauderdale Beach Park.

Feb. 21-24 — Speaking of LGBTQ
Pride Fort Lauderdale will return to the sands of the beach, and this year the theme is Carnaval, so if you thought the festival was colorful and sexy before, look out.
