FORT LAUDERDALE —Jalen Haynes’ follow shot in the lane at the buzzer sent Dillard past Stranahan

68-66 on Friday in a Broward County thriller between two programs that played in state championship games in March.

With the score tied

66-all, Dillard transfer Ivan Reynolds had two shots blocked in the waning seconds. The last one dropped right into the hands of the

6-foot-8 Haynes.

“I thought there was no more time on the clock left, so I just threw it up,” Haynes said. “And it went in.”

Haynes led Dillard (3-0) with 23 points and senior Chandler Mack added 20, 12 of them coming on free throws. Jvonni Roblejo added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Chayse Culpepper led three players in double figures for Stranahan (3-1) with

11 points. Dave Herard and Inady Legiste contributed

10 points apiece.

The Dragons stayed close on the road, drilling 10

3-pointers to Dillard’s zero. Stranahan won it all in Class 6A a year ago; Dillard made the 7A state championship game back in March.

Dillard trailed 35-28 after two quarters and Stranahan took its biggest lead of the game, 37-29, to open the third period. But the Panthers outscored the Dragons 19-10 in the third period to take a 47-45 advantage into the final frame.

The fourth quarter was tight the entire way until Haynes ended it.

Dillard led 15-12 after one quarter on the strength of six points from Haynes.

Stranahan outscored Dillard 23-13 in the second period to grab a 35-28 advantage. The Dragons used outside shooting to do so as they canned five 3-pointers while the Panthers did not sink any.

Dillard won the girls game 86-6.
