BOCA RATON — FAU further cemented its status as the best team at forcing turnovers during the 2019 season.

Cornerback Chris Tooley’s interception in the fourth quarter of the Conference USA championship game was the Owls’ 21st of the season, breaking the previous record of

20 set by the 2017 team. Tooley intercepted UAB quarterback Tyler Johnston III with 13 minutes, 19 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

The Owls got a touchdown on the ensuing drive, with quarterback Chris Robison connecting with running back Chauncey Mason on a 20-yard touchdown for the game’s final score. It was Mason’s first TD of the season.

Cornerback Meiko Dotson intercepted UAB quarterback Dylan Hopkins in the first quarter of Saturday’s game for the Owls’

20th interception of the season. FAU took over on the UAB 31-yard line and capitalized on the takeaway. Running back Malcolm Davidson rushed for 37 combined yards on the two plays after the turnover.

Robison connected with wide receiver Deangelo Antoine on a 14-yard reception to put the Owls on the Blazers’ 18. Three plays later, Robison threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver John Mitchell with 14:09 left in the second quarter. FAU led 21-3 after kicker Vladimir Rivas made the extra point.

Dotson’s interception was his ninth of the year. He broke his three-way tie with Texas Tech senior defensive back Douglas Coleman and San Diego State senior defensive back Luq Barcoo for the most interceptions in the nation this season.

The redshirt junior broke the record for the most interceptions in a season in program history during the Owls’ game against Southern Miss on Nov. 30.

FAU came into Saturday’s game tied for the most takeaways and interceptions in the NCAA. The Owls had a plus-19 turnover margin heading into Saturday’s game, which was the best in the nation.

Bryant reaches 1,000

Tight end Harrison Bryant eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards for the season against the

Blazers, becoming the third FAU player in program history and third C-USA tight end ever to record 1,000 yards in a season.

He’s the first Owl since Cortez Gent

(2007) to record 1,000 receiving yards in a season. Anthony Crissinger-Hill (2003) has the program record for most receiving yards in a season with 1,134.

Bryant broke the 1,000 mark with an

11-yard reception in the third quarter against UAB. He finished Saturday’s game with four receptions for 39 yards and a touchdown.

Bryant, who was named one of the three finalists for the John Mackey Award, has

1,004 receiving yards this season. He was also named to the C-USA All-Academic team for the second year in a row. The health administration major has a 3.65 GPA.

Freshman running back Larry McCammon returned to the field during the C-USA title game after being banged up with undisclosed injuries.

He recorded his first rushing attempts since Nov. 2 against Western Kentucky in Saturday’s game. He finished with 9 rushing yards on two attempts.
