Front could bring severe storms Monday

- By Zachary Covey WPEC-CBS 12

South Florida could see some strong to severe storms Sunday evening and Monday morning, thanks to a low pressure system in the Gulf of Mexico.

Today’s weather will be similar to the past several days, with mostly cloudy to overcast skies, a few scattered showers rolling on shore throughout the day, breezy and highs in the 70s.

This trend continues as the winds slowly begin to shift from the east to the southeast over the next 24 to 36 hours, with a similar forecast expected during the day on Sunday as well.

By Sunday night, things begin to get a bit more interesting.

Sunday morning, an area of low pressure should form near the surface across the Gulf of Mexico. This surface low will begin to meander closer to the

Florida coast with the upper-level low moving right behind it by roughly six hours.

The placement of this surface low so close to the upper-level low means that energy in the atmosphere will be maximized allowing for some showers and thunderstorms to potentially strengthen. Right now, the most likely time for showers and thunderstorms to begin to move into the area will be during the overnight hours Sunday into Monday.

On top of the energy being put into the atmosphere between these two areas of low pressure, a strong jet of very fast winds will exist overhead. This may allow for some storms to begin to rotate, as well as produce strong gusty winds at the surface. Strong to severe storms are possible, with threats of damaging winds, heavy rain, frequent lightning and even a low-end tornado threat through Monday morning.

While an agreement has become more apparent between the models on the forecast, the timing remains tricky. At this time, the strongest storms may move through between 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. Monday morning, so be prepared for a really tricky and hazardous morning commute on Monday. although the timing is subject to change.

Once the front goes through Monday morning, showers will redevelop in the afternoon behind the cold front, but storm fuel for severe storms will be gone meaning any rainfall Monday afternoon will be light in nature. Highs will warm into the mid-70s.

By Tuesday, mostly sunny skies return with highs in the low 70s. Christmas day looks nice too with mostly sunny skies and highs in the upper 70s.
