The sand is new, wide and smooth on Boynton Beach’s public beach after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers finished a restoration project in March.

The project replaced sand lost to Hurricane Irma in 2017, and now there’s plenty of room for coronavirus social distancing. Blue umbrellas, which can be rented through a concessionaire, are spread out along the 1,000 feet of beach along the ocean. The corps also restored the beach 3,000 feet north of the city’s boundaries and 2,000 feet south.

Everything seems new at this serene stretch north of the Woolbright Road exit on I-95. FPL solar awnings provide shade for parked cars, and there’s a charger for electric cars. There’s a giant chessboard with humansize rooks and pawns. A lengthy handicap ramp to the beach is untarnished and clean.

There are many benches for looking out at the sand and grassy areas for children to play. Playgrounds are closed, though, due to coronavirus.
