Pompano Beach has the best of both worlds: quiet on weekdays but bustling on weekends, sunny on the sand but shady by the boardwalk and chock-full of family-friendly activities. Fish off the pier, surf the water or the Internet with free WiFi, and exercise at the outdoor public gym before grabbing a bite from the concessions stand or one of the few local restaurants and bars nearby.

Don’t worry about the party scene here — the beach currently closes at sunset. Instead, keep an eye out to snag one of the limited pavilion areas and volleyball nets, which are available for rent. And for the adrenaline junkies, jet skiing is permitted at Alsdorf Park near the pier.

COVID-19 precautions: Social distancing is enforced by Broward County Sheriff ’s Office on the beach. Masks are required on the pier. The playground is temporarily closed. Lifeguards: 9 a.m.-6:45 p.m. daily Bathroom conditions: fair. There are three sets of restrooms — one set north of the pier, one set south and one in the parking garage.

Activities: Swimming and boogie boarding are allowed on both sides of the pier, but surfing is limited to the north side. Jet skis and boats can be launched at specified points. Visitors can tan, eat, relax and exercise on the sand. Alcohol can only be bought and had at local restaurants. The old pier concession stand is currently under construction to become the Lucky Fish Beach Bar & Grill, an open-air tiki-esque restaurant. Animals are prohibited on the beach.

Parking: Street parking is available with the city’s Passport Parking app ranging from

$1.25 to $2.75 an hour. Garage parking can also be found nearby for $1.50 an hour.

Pier hours: 7 a.m. - 10 p.m. daily. Sightseeing is free until July 19, and fishing costs $6 a day with a three-rod-limit per person.
