Hallandale Beach offers senior rent, utility assistance

- By Brett Shweky

In order to make housing more affordable for seniors during the pandemic, the city of Hallandale Beach recently created the senior rental and utility assistance program.

The program provides assistance to income-eligible senior households within the Hallandale Beach Community Redevelopment Agency boundaries who spend more than 30% of their total income on housing costs. Providing $100 a month, the eligible applicants will receive payments for up to six months.

Residents must be 62 or older to apply, with funding available for up to 50 applicants.

“The HBCRA is excited to launch this program in these unprecedented times to help our seniors, one of the most vulnerable populations in our community,” HBCRA Executive Director Jeremy Earle said. “We are working aggressively to continue providing programs that will help to prevent senior homelessness.”

In order to apply, individuals must provide the following required documents: state driver’s license or ID, proof of income for every adult in the household, list and proof of monthly expenses, late or eviction notice from the landlord and the lease agreement. The documents will be reviewed by the program director.

Applications are available on the HBCRA website.

The senior rental and utility assistance program was made possible through the approved allocation of $30,000 by the HBCRA Board of Directors on May 19.
