The South the way it was
Cal Thomas in his March 31 commentary ignores the brutality and inhumanity of Jim Crow while intellectualizing it’s history. His treatise is a freshman’s thoughts on Southern History, without understanding or even caring of the impact on African Americans. Yes, there has been progress. African American lives are acknowledged. And in the decades following World War II , the Solid South was Democratic. But Thomas ignores the fact that, when President Johnson passed the Civil Rights Act, the South turned overnight to the Republican Party. The leaders didn’t change, and remain just as racist then as they and Thomas are now. Thomas and his ilk care little for the extra burden Georgia’s criminal election law will create, only that the law will shave a few hundred thousand votes from Democrats by eliminating total voters. Jesus Christ preached giving food to the hungry and water to the thirsty, and if such hungry and thirsty person spent hours in line waiting to vote, Georgia has clearly found grounds for Christ’s crucifixion .
