Maria Hernandez, chief program officer at United Way of Broward County, has been selected to participate in United Way Worldwide’s Advanced Leadership Program, a yearlong leadership development course designed for senior-level professionals who are strong performers and have demonstrated a capacity for leadership.

Funeral, Consumer Services

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the appointment of Andrew Clark, Sanjena Clay, Christian Jensen, John Williams and Jay Lyons to the board of Funeral, Cemetery and Consumer Services. In South Florida, Clay, of West Palm Beach, has held numerous positions with the Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Office, including senior law enforcement planner, human resources division manager and staff inspections section manager. She is a founding member of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women and serves on the Board of Trustees of Edward Waters College. Lyons, of Boca Raton, is the director of Congregation Chevra Kadisha and the South Florida Jewish Cemetery.

Cultural

Spiritus Law Managing Partner Steven

W. Zelkowitz has been appointed to the board of directors of The Miami Symphony Orchestra, now in its 31st season.

Religious

Pope Francis has appointed Dr. Roza Pati, to serve on the Vatican’s Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development. Pati is St. Thomas University College of Law professor, executive director of the LL.M./ J.S.D. program in Intercultural Human Rights, and founding director of the John J. Brunetti Human Trafficking Academy. This was preceded by her appointment by Pope Benedict XVI to solely represent the United States as a member of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace from 2012 — 2017.

Real estate

Native Realty, a Fort Lauderdale-based commercial real estate firm, announced the addition of Real Estate Agents Dino Flora and Spencer Scalzitti. The firm also has promoted Kaley Tuning to sales director.

Education

Oxbridge Academy announced that Rainey Wyatt has been appointed as the coordinator of the new Oxbridge Academy Middle School.

A new program of Center for Creative Education, The Foundations School, opened in the nonprofit’s Northwood Village location in West Palm Beach and has announced two leadership positions guiding the new school. Jerry Crank has been promoted to chief operating officer for CCE and Dr. Kevin Kovacs has been named director of schools.

Medical

Shane Strum has been named president and chief executive officer of Broward Health. Most recently, Strum was chief of staff to Gov. Ron DeSantis. Prior to his work with the state, Strum was senior vice president at Memorial Healthcare System in Hollywood.

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the appointment of Wael Barsoum to the Board of Medicine. Barsoum, of Fort Lauderdale, is a medical doctor, orthopedic surgeon and president and chief transformation officer at Healthcare Outcomes Performance Co.

Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center announced its Physician of the Quarter: Dr. Sean Sawh, Urologist; Employee of the Quarter: LiTia Brennan, Phlebotomist and DAISY Award: to Mary Wallace, ICU Nurse.

Law

Boca Raton-based law firm Sachs Sax Caplan has announced the elevation of three of their attorneys, Michael Chapnick, Joel Kenwood and Angela Prudenti from the position of senior counsel to principal.

Kelley Kronenberg announced two new insurance defense practice leaders: Jeffrey M. Wank has been named chair of first party property insurance defense and David S. Henry has been named chair of general liability & third-party insurance defense.

Finance

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the appointment of Diana Taub to the State Retirement Commission. Taub, of Pembroke Pines, is a retired teacher and administrator with Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

Freedom Advisory LLC added Jeff Clark as a financial advisor, in Fort Lauderdale.

Governmental

Broward County Deputy County Administrator Monica Cepero has been recognized by Equality Florida as the 2021 recipient of the Voice of Equality Award. This honor is awarded annually to a person who has dedicated passion, courage and commitment to help Florida’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer community move closer to full equality. Equality Florida is the largest civil rights organization dedicated to helping Florida’s LGBTQ community overcome harassment and/or discrimination based on their sexual orientation or gender identity or expression. The Commission was established in 1969 to enforce the Florida Civil Rights Act and address discrimination issues through education, outreach and partnerships. Cepero will receive her award at Equality Florida’s statewide virtual event on May 23.
