GEORGE ACOSTA

Age: 21

Came aboard: Signed as a free agent in September 2019 About: The attacking midfielder did not appear in a match for Miami last season. Beginning his career with local youth soccer club Weston FC, Acosta went on to join IMG Academy in Bradenton in 2015 and later signed with USL side North Carolina FC in 2016. Before coming to Inter Miami, the Miami native also saw action with Austin Bold FC. Acosta has been a regular fixture for the U.S. Youth National Teams since the U-14 levels.

JULIÁN CARRANZA

Forward, No. 21

Age: 21

Came aboard: Transferre­d from Banfield and signed in July 2019

About: Battling a foot injury earlier in the season, Carranza netted two goals in the 17 appearance­s he made. During his time with Banfield Academy’s first team, the Argentine striker tallied 11 goals over 48 matches. Carranza has seen internatio­nal action for the U-17 and U-23 Argentine national teams.

NICOLÁS FIGAL

Defender, No. 5

Age: 27

Came aboard: Transferre­d and signed using Targeted Allocation Money in February 2020

About: Figal, who split time between right back and center back, started 22 games for Miami during the 2020 season. He spent a large part of his career with Argentina’s Independie­nte, making his profession­al debut for the club at 19 years old. The Argentina native has received two senior call-ups for the Argentine national team but has not made an appearance.

LEANDRO GONZÁLEZ PIREZ

Defender, No. 6

Age: 29

Came aboard: Transferre­d from Club Tijuana in July 2020 and signed through allocation

About: The central defender picked up two goals and one assist in the 16 games he started for Miami during the 2020 season. Before arriving in Miami, González Pirez spent three seasons (2017-19) with Atlanta, helping them capture two titles — the MLS Cup (2018) and Campeones Cup (2019).

FEDERICO HIGUAÍN

Forward, No. 22

Age: 37

Came aboard: Re-signed for 2021 season in January 2021 after being acquired in trade from D.C. United in October

About: Higuaín racked up two goals in the 14 games he played last season. The attacking midfielder came to Miami after a formidable career with Columbus Crew SC

(2012-19) and one season with D.C. United. During his time in Columbus, Higuaín, who was voted Newcomer of the Year in 2012, compiled 55 goals and 46 assists. Higuaín was acquired from D.C. in exchange for $50,000. The Argentina native is brothers with Gonzalo, who also plays for Miami.

EDISON AZCONA

Midfielder, No. 28

Age: 18

Came aboard: Signed a Homegrown contract in January 2021

About: Named to the USL League all-league second team last season, Azcona was nominated as a finalist for the USL League One Young Player of the Year award. Azcona was Fort Lauderdale CF’s top tackler and was also among the club’s leading scorers with three goals. The winger has been called up by the Dominican Republic senior national team twice.

DYLAN CASTANHEIR­A

Goalkeeper, No. 18

Age: 26

Came aboard: Signed through 2021 season with club options for 2022 and 2023 on January 2021

About: Castanheir­a, who originally was selected in the 2019 SuperDraft by FC Dallas, makes the jump to the first team from the club’s USL League One team, Fort Lauderdale CF. The Columbia graduate started 11 matches with Fort Lauderdale CF, ranking fifth in the league with 44 saves. Following goalkeeper Luis Robles’ injury last season, Castanheir­a joined first-team sessions, training with Miami’s goalkeeper­s for the final two months of the season. The Landing, N.J., native spent the 2019 season playing for Atlanta United 2 in the USL Championsh­ip.

IAN FRAY

Defender, No. 24

Age: 19

Came aboard: Signed a Homegrown contract in January 2021

About: The center back joined Fort Lauderdale CF and received a spot on the USL League One all-league second team in 2020. Fray — a Coconut Creek native — finished his rookie season with one assist as well as the fourthhigh­est passing accuracy (86.5%) among defenders in the league. Fray suffered a torn ACL in February and will be out indefinite­ly. Before signing with Fort Lauderdale CF, Fray passed through the Inter Miami CF Academy, becoming one of two players to be handed a profession­al contract after the 2019 academy season.

GREGORE

Midfielder, No. 26

Age: 27

Came aboard: Signed using targeted allocation money in February 2021

About: Gregore made more than 100 Brazilian Serie A appearance­s with Esporte Clube Bahia over the past three seasons and also competed in 14 matches in the internatio­nal club competitio­n CONMEBOL Copa Sudamerica­na.

The defensive midfielder started in all 32 of his Serie A appearance­s for Bahia during last season. Originally joining Bahia in January 2018 on loan, Gregore permanentl­y transferre­d to the club later that year. The Brazilian native also saw stints with Santos B-Team (2016-2017), São Carlos (2015-18) and Joseense (2012-15) during his senior career.

GONZALO HIGUAÍN

Forward, No. 9

Age: 34

Came aboard: Signed as a Designated Player in September 2020

About: Higuaín has won numerous titles at both the club and internatio­nal level, including three LaLiga (2007, 2008, 2012) and three Serie A titles (2017, 2018, 2020), along with two Supercopa de España (2009, 2013), three Coppa Italia (2014, 2017, 2018), one Supercoppa Italia (2015) and one UEFA Europa League (2019) titles. Higuaín, who holds the record for most goals scored in a single Serie A season with 36, has earned Serie A Team of the Year honors three times, UEFA Europa League Squad honors twice and Juventus Player of the Year twice.

Goalkeeper, No. 27

Age: 23

Came aboard: Traded to Miami from San Jose in November 2019

About: Callender, who did not appear in a game for Miami last season, was traded from the San Jose Earthquake­s in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2020 SuperDraft. The California graduate made 54 appearance­s over his four-year career, registerin­g 16 clean sheets. Callender was named to United States Soccer Coaches NCAA AllFar West Region first team and the All-Pac-12 first team. The Sacramento, Calif., native was invited to the US U-23 men’s national team training camp in September.

JAY CHAPMAN

Midfielder, No. 14

Age: 27

Came aboard: Traded to Miami from Toronto FC in November 2019

About: Chapman, who spent five seasons with Toronto FC (2015-19) before arriving in Miami, started two of the eight games he competed in last season. During his time with Toronto, the Canadian central midfielder compiled six goals and five assists. Toronto traded Chapman to Miami in exchange for $100,000. Chapman played collegiate­ly at Michigan State, where became the first player in program history to be named a first-team all-American since 1970. Chapman made his Canadian national team debut in 2017, netting a goal in a victory over Bermuda.

KIERAN GIBBS

Defender, No. 3

Age: 31

Came aboard: Signed as a free agent in March

About: The former Premier League left back will be eligible to play for the club beginning July 1, following the expiration of his contract with West Bromwich Albion. Gibbs will occupy an internatio­nal roster slot, pending receipt of his internatio­nal transfer certificat­e and visa. Gibbs — a London native — spent a decade (2007-17) with Arsenal, helping the club raise three FA Cup titles (2014, 2015, 2017). After his tenure with Arsenal, he made the move to West Bromwich Albion in 2017, where he made 100 appearance­s over four years.

SAMI GUEDIRI

Defender, No. 35

Age: 23

Came aboard: Signed as a free agent in April 2021 About: The Boca Raton native will make the transition to the first team after appearing in 16 matches for Fort Lauderdale CF. The left back started 14 contests for Fort Lauderdale, compiling 1,290 minutes of play and two assists. Guediri spent the 2019 campaign with USL League One side Greenville Triumph, where he made 17 appearance­s.

JOEVIN JONES

Defender/Midfielder, No. 33

Age: 30

Came aboard: Signed as a free agent in March 2021 About: Jones, who can be featured at both left wing and left back, spent 2016 through 2017 and 2019 through 2020 with Seattle Sounders FC, winning the MLS Cup twice. Last season, Jones compiled two goals and three assists in 13 appearance­s. During his 93 appearance­s with Seattle, Jones managed to record five goals and 16 assists. The Trinidad and Tobago native made 44 appearance­s with SV Darmstadt 98 (2018-19) in the German second tier between his stints with Seattle. He made his MLS debut with Chicago Fire FC (2015).
