Alan David Breward
1938 – 2022
Alan David Breward, retired advertising and sales executive, passed away at the age of 83 on February
7, 2022, in Lighthouse Point, FL. Alan was born in Tauranga on the North Island of New Zealand on December 19, 1938, to Alfred and Muriel Breward, a school Supervisor and homemaker. The youngest of two children, Alan loved
the outdoors and was an active athlete. He played rugby and tennis, and was an accomplished sailor, even participating in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.
After graduating from the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, Alan began a successful career in advertising at Ted Bates, and then went on to senior leadership roles at Dancer Fitzgerald and Wells, Rich, Greene. He was instrumental in key campaigns for Benson & Hedges, Ford Motor Company, Aquafresh, and Lancaster. He left advertising to join Beecham (now GlaxoSmithKline) to run their distribution efforts for the Western hemisphere; and traveled extensively to lead their efforts abroad. That expertise in international business development was critical in his final role before retirement at Caliper Corporation, in Princeton, NJ, where he was responsible for launching their international business.
Alan met his wife of 49 years, Joan Studdiford Breward, in New York at the 21 Club at an advertising event. They were then married in 1972, and began a life in Pennsylvania, where she had grown up and became a sought-after Interior Designer.
Alan still has family in New Zealand and Australia and is survived by his wife, Joan, his daughters Alison and Susan, his grandchildren, Lauren and Neil, and his brother, Ian.
He was admired for his warmth, his kind nature, his smile, and his laugh. He could easily connect with everyone he met, and he will be greatly missed. Details of a memorial service to be held in Lambertville, NJ, will be announced at a future date.
