10 local scholarships available to South Florida students
With current inflation, a competitive housing market and increasing gas prices, it’s more important than ever for families to save money. Rising educational expenses only add to the burden: CNBC cites a 169% rise in college costs over the past four decades with a mere 19% increase in wages for workers ages 22 to 27.
Here is a list of some scholarships available to South Florida students for this year, including qualifications, deadlines and how to apply:
Summer Camp Scholarship Program
This scholarship is for children living in families whose income is at or below 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. Recipients will receive full tuition and fees for summer camp for participating camps in Palm Beach County. 2022 Alyssa Sangeeta Jacobson Scholarship
Recipients of this scholarship will be awarded $1,000 per year. This will be dispersed over the course of two semesters and, dependent on the certificate program or degree, will be renewable for a maximum of four years. Both graduating high school seniors and graduates who will attend technical vocational school or accredited college starting in fall 2022 are eligible to apply. Those who are current vocational, college and technical students can also apply. Individuals who are involved in the delinquency or dependency systems as well as members of Future Leaders United for Change will be given additional consideration. Applications will end March 31. 29th Annual Palm Beach County Property Appraiser’s Scholarships
This collegiate scholarship will be awarded to six recipients at $1,500 each and also provide an opportunity for a paid summer internship in the Property Appraiser’s Office. Regarding eligibility, high school seniors applying must have a 3.0 GPA minimum, reside in Palm Beach County and have plans to attend a higher-education institution full time. Guy Harvey Scholarship
This scholarship was brought to life in 2010 through a partnership with the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation and Florida Sea Grant. It is aimed toward students going to universities and colleges in Florida studying research in ecology, biology, management or habitat of fish living in Florida’s marine environment. Junior League of the Palm Beaches Scholarship
This scholarship is worth $2,500 for student expenses and is awarded to a high school senior who will attend college in the fall. To be considered, applicants need to volunteer outside of school and place emphasis on encouraging voluntarism as well as assisting others in reaching their potential. City of Greenacres 2022 Educational Scholarship Program
This scholarship awards recipients individually with $1,500 for technical, vocational, and academic books and tuition. Applicants must reside in Greenacres, be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and show a financial need for this scholarship. In addition, they must be a high school senior or graduate, have obtained a GED or attend college. Applications are open until April 8 at 5 p.m. Visit

Miramar Education Advisory Board Scholarship 2022
The recipient of this scholarship will be awarded $1,000 for education expenses. On April 29, the winner will be notified. Note that the winner must attend the award presentation, which will take place at the city of Miramar’s City Commission meeting on May
10. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.0, be a high school senior and reside in the city of Miramar. Applications run until April 18 at 11:59 p.m. Visit forms.

Samuel S. Brown Scholarship Fund
Sponsored by the city of Lauderdale Lakes, the Samuel S. Brown Scholarship Fund’s amount is decided each year and given to students who are involved in the community and achieve high academic success. This scholarship is open to both high school seniors and college students who are in good academic standing and Lauderdale Lakes residents for one year before and after application. They also must be accepted or enrolled in an accredited college or vocational program. Applicants will be required to submit a 500 word (at most) essay on this topic: “Explain the importance of higher education and the impact that it has on our society, along with the significance of youth and community involvement”. In addition, they must submit a current transcript, three letters of recommendation (one from a nonrelative faculty member from school), include community service in Lauderdale Lakes, partake in an interview with members of the Lauderdale Lakes’ Scholarship Committee and attend a commission meeting to receive the scholarship. Becca’s Closet
Located in the Festival Marketplace in Pompano Beach, Becca’s Closet has been collecting and distributing dresses to high school girls with financial need since 2003. Spirit of Generosity - The purpose of this need-based scholarship is to encourage students who have demonstrated outstanding community service during high school to continue their efforts throughout their lives and to inspire others to do the same. Applicants must be a graduating high school senior anywhere in the United States; have a minimum 2.0 unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale; demonstrate financial need — all pages of 2022-2023 FAFSA Student Aid Report (SAR) required (fafsa.gov); have made an outstanding, documented contribution to his or her community through volunteer service of any kind; attend a regionally-accredited two- or four-year college/ university or technical/vocational institution in fall of 2022; and be a U.S. citizen, legal resident.
Involvement Scholarship for Becca’s Closet Involvement - The purpose of this servicebased scholarship is to encourage students who have demonstrated outstanding community service during high school to continue their efforts throughout their lives and to inspire others to do the same. Eligible applicants should be a graduating high school senior; have a minimum 2.0 unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale; must have made an outstanding, documented contribution to his or her community through the creation of and or involvement in a Becca’s Closet chapter or Becca’s Closet organized through a supporting organization; attend a regionally-accredited two- or four-year college/university or technical institution in fall of 2022; and be U.S. citizen, legal resident.
Drittel Family Scholarship The purpose of this service-based scholarship is to encourage South Florida students who have demonstrated outstanding community service during high school to continue their efforts throughout their lives and to inspire others to do the same. Applicants should be a graduating high school senior in Broward, Miami-Dade or Palm Beach counties; minimum 2.0 unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale; must have made an outstanding, documented contribution to his or her community through the creation of and or involvement in a Becca’s Closet chapter or Becca’s Closet organized through a supporting organization; will attend a regionally-accredited two- or four-year college/university or technical/vocational institution in fall of 2022; and be a U.S. citizen, legal resident.
CareerSource Broward
By working with training and education partners as well as organizations, CareerSource Broward has over 200 programs. Some help includes scholarships, relevant paid work experience, job placement guidance after training completion or post-grad, and assistance with transportation though bus passes or gas allowances. Applicants must be ages 18-23, reside in Broward County, have a high-school diploma or GED, and not be currently enrolled in school (must be out of school for at least six months).
