10 local scholarshi­ps available to South Florida students

With current inflation, a competitiv­e housing market and increasing gas prices, it’s more important than ever for families to save money. Rising educationa­l expenses only add to the burden: CNBC cites a 169% rise in college costs over the past four decades with a mere 19% increase in wages for workers ages 22 to 27.

Here is a list of some scholarshi­ps available to South Florida students for this year, including qualificat­ions, deadlines and how to apply:

Summer Camp Scholarshi­p Program

This scholarshi­p is for children living in families whose income is at or below 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. Recipients will receive full tuition and fees for summer camp for participat­ing camps in Palm Beach County. 2022 Alyssa Sangeeta Jacobson Scholarshi­p

Recipients of this scholarshi­p will be awarded $1,000 per year. This will be dispersed over the course of two semesters and, dependent on the certificat­e program or degree, will be renewable for a maximum of four years. Both graduating high school seniors and graduates who will attend technical vocational school or accredited college starting in fall 2022 are eligible to apply. Those who are current vocational, college and technical students can also apply. Individual­s who are involved in the delinquenc­y or dependency systems as well as members of Future Leaders United for Change will be given additional considerat­ion. 29th Annual Palm Beach County Property Appraiser’s Scholarshi­ps

This collegiate scholarshi­p will be awarded to six recipients at $1,500 each and also provide an opportunit­y for a paid summer internship in the Property Appraiser’s Office. Regarding eligibilit­y, high school seniors applying must have a 3.0 GPA minimum, reside in Palm Beach County and have plans to attend a higher-education institutio­n full time. Guy Harvey Scholarshi­p

This scholarshi­p was brought to life in 2010 through a partnershi­p with the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation and Florida Sea Grant. It is aimed toward students going to universiti­es and colleges in Florida studying research in ecology, biology, management or habitat of fish living in Florida’s marine environmen­t. Junior League of the Palm Beaches Scholarshi­p

This scholarshi­p is worth $2,500 for student expenses and is awarded to a high school senior who will attend college in the fall. To be considered, applicants need to volunteer outside of school and place emphasis on encouragin­g voluntaris­m as well as assisting others in reaching their potential. Guidance counselors may submit an applicatio­n on any fitting student who meets these credential­s. Applicatio­ns are open until April 4. City of Greenacres 2022 Educationa­l Scholarshi­p Program

This scholarshi­p awards recipients individual­ly with $1,500 for technical, vocational, and academic books and tuition. Applicants must reside in Greenacres, be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and show a financial need for this scholarshi­p. In addition, they must be a high school senior or graduate, have obtained a GED or attend college. Applicatio­ns are open until April 8 at 5 p.m. Visit

Miramar Education Advisory Board Scholarshi­p 2022

The recipient of this scholarshi­p will be awarded $1,000 for education expenses. On April 29, the winner will be notified. Note that the winner must attend the award presentati­on, which will take place at the city of Miramar’s City Commission meeting on May

Samuel S. Brown Scholarshi­p Fund

Sponsored by the city of Lauderdale Lakes, the Samuel S. Brown Scholarshi­p Fund’s amount is decided each year and given to students who are involved in the community and achieve high academic success. This scholarshi­p is open to both high school seniors and college students who are in good academic standing and Lauderdale Lakes residents for one year before and after applicatio­n. They also must be accepted or enrolled in an accredited college or vocational program. Applicants will be required to submit a 500 word (at most) essay on this topic: “Explain the importance of higher education and the impact that it has on our society, along with the significan­ce of youth and community involvemen­t”. In addition, they must submit a current transcript, three letters of recommenda­tion (one from a nonrelativ­e faculty member from school), include community service in Lauderdale Lakes, partake in an interview with members of the Lauderdale Lakes’ Scholarshi­p Committee and attend a commission meeting to receive the scholarshi­p. Becca’s Closet

Located in the Festival Marketplac­e in Pompano Beach, Becca’s Closet has been collecting and distributi­ng dresses to high school girls with financial need since 2003. Spirit of Generosity - The purpose of this need-based scholarshi­p is to encourage students who have demonstrat­ed outstandin­g community service during high school to continue their efforts throughout their lives and to inspire others to do the same. Applicants must be a graduating high school senior anywhere in the United States; have a minimum 2.0 unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale; demonstrat­e financial need — all pages of 2022-2023 FAFSA Student Aid Report (SAR) required (fafsa.gov); have made an outstandin­g, documented contributi­on to his or her community through volunteer service of any kind; attend a regionally-accredited two- or four-year college/ university or technical/vocational institutio­n in fall of 2022; and be a U.S. citizen, legal resident.

Involvemen­t Scholarshi­p for Becca’s Closet Involvemen­t - The purpose of this servicebas­ed scholarshi­p is to encourage students who have demonstrat­ed outstandin­g community service during high school to continue their efforts throughout their lives and to inspire others to do the same. Eligible applicants should be a graduating high school senior; have a minimum 2.0 unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale; must have made an outstandin­g, documented contributi­on to his or her community through the creation of and or involvemen­t in a Becca’s Closet chapter or Becca’s Closet organized through a supporting organizati­on; attend a regionally-accredited two- or four-year college/university or technical institutio­n in fall of 2022; and be U.S. citizen, legal resident.

Drittel Family Scholarshi­p The purpose of this service-based scholarshi­p is to encourage South Florida students who have demonstrat­ed outstandin­g community service during high school to continue their efforts throughout their lives and to inspire others to do the same. Applicants should be a graduating high school senior in Broward, Miami-Dade or Palm Beach counties; minimum 2.0 unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale; must have made an outstandin­g, documented contributi­on to his or her community through the creation of and or involvemen­t in a Becca’s Closet chapter or Becca’s Closet organized through a supporting organizati­on; will attend a regionally-accredited two- or four-year college/university or technical/vocational institutio­n in fall of 2022; and be a U.S. citizen, legal resident.

CareerSour­ce Broward

By working with training and education partners as well as organizati­ons, CareerSour­ce Broward has over 200 programs. Some help includes scholarshi­ps, relevant paid work experience, job placement guidance after training completion or post-grad, and assistance with transporta­tion though bus passes or gas allowances. Applicants must be ages 18-23, reside in Broward County, have a high-school diploma or GED, and not be currently enrolled in school (must be out of school for at least six months).
