Juneteenth events in Broward and Palm Beach

Although Juneteenth officially became a federal holiday last year, it is actually the longest standing African American holiday. Juneteenth celebrates the United States ending slavery on June 19, 1865, when federal troops came to Galveston, Texas to not only free those who were enslaved but to regulate the Lone Star state. Their arrival was two and a half years following the Emancipati­on Proclamati­on.

To celebrate this historical significan­ce, here are some events in Broward and Palm Beach counties celebratin­g Juneteenth:

Celebrate Juneteenth (Take-N-Make)

- Stop by the Stirling Road Branch Library, 3151 Stirling Road, or Tyrone Bryant Branch, 2230 NW 21st Ave., in Fort Lauderdale to pick up a Juneteenth take-n-make bag. Bags are available through June 24 while supplies last. 954-3577550.

Juneteenth Flag Take & Make

Juneteenth: A Celebratio­n of Freedom

Participan­ts will have the opportunit­y to create an individual work of art on canvas in honor of Juneteenth. All necessary materials to complete the project will be included in a kit to take home. Authors Speak Series with Simone Brown - Author Simone Brown will speak at “The Impact of Race on American Society,” the final session of Art Garage’s Authors Speak Series. Browne, who is also an associate professor in the Department of African and African Diaspora Studies at the University of Texas among other positions, will discuss her book, “Dark Matters: On the Surveillan­ce of Blackness.” A limited supply of books will be available for attendees. 7 p.m. June 16 at Arts Garage, 94 NE Second Ave., Delray Beach. Black Theatre Fringe Festival of South Florida -

The Black Theatre Fringe Festival will not only showcase talented theatrical performanc­es from actors, directors and others but it will also offer profession­al training for all skillsets and ages. Attendees can opt to pay for a singular class or attend for as many days and performanc­es scheduled. Freedom Fest Celebratio­n -

There will be indoor and outdoor festivals during this celebratio­n. The indoor festival will have short films (showing all day) and art displays from local artists. The outdoor festival will showcase a drumline, spoken word poetry and other musical performanc­es. Juneteenth and Centennial Parade -

Riviera Beach is not only celebratin­g Juneteenth but also 100 years of its city. Activities, live music, vendors, dancers and more will be present. The route will start at 3700 Broadway Ave. to 13th St. (Marina Event Center). The end of the parade as well as the fun zone will be at 190 E.

The Freedom Symposium

Festival for All

- Rosemary Square will host a family friendly festival that spans two days. Saturday will feature live music, local vendors, classes hosted by Black-owned businesses and nonprofits, and more. Sunday’s festivitie­s will occur in conjunctio­n with the one-year anniversar­y of Rohi’s Readery, a children’s bookstore with an emphasis on social justice, diversity and inclusivit­y.
