Oakland Park man faces attempted murder charge

Deputies say surveilance shows him wielding a machete, shooting a man

A 22-year-old man is facing an attempted murder charge after he was seen on surveillance video brandishing a machete at another man before shooting him in the face from feet away, officials said.

Luis Alberto Escolástico Canela, of Oakland Park, was arrested in North Lauderdale on Thursday, a month after he allegedly wielded the machete and shot the victim shortly before 2 a.m. June 6 outside of a store, the Broward Sheriff ’s Office said.

Video released by the Sheriff ’s Office last week showed two men talking outside of the store near the 3800 block of North Andrews Avenue in Oakland Park.

The suspect in the video, later identified as Canela, walked up to the victim who was sitting on a bicycle, pointed at him and said something before he walked out of the camera’s view.

Another camera angle showed Canela lifting up his dark-colored hoodie to reveal a machete. He then walked toward the victim as the two exchanged words, the video shows.

Several people were standing nearby and had walked out of the store at the moment Canela pulled the machete from its hiding spot, the video shows.

Canela pulled out of a parking spot and moved in front of a large shipping truck before he was seen on video walking back toward the victim pointing a gun.

Just feet away from the man on the bicycle, a spark flew from the end of the gun. Surveillance video showed the man slumping over onto the sidewalk as passersby outside the store ran.

The Sheriff ’s Office said paramedics took the victim to a local hospital and he survived. The victim’s name is being withheld under Marsy’s Law, a voter-approved constitutional amendment that allows crime victims to shield their name and other identifying information from the public.

Canela was being held in the Broward Main Jail on one count of attempted murder.
