For a Broward mayor
Re: On county mayor, let the people decide | Opinion
As we recently observed 30 years of surviving Hurricane Andrew, Broward County Commissioner Tim Ryan authored a viewpoint on the need for a county mayor. I cite Andrew because the national media that descended upon South Florida in 1992 didn’t know who to
talk to, because South Florida was like a bunch of city-states.
Now that most unincorporated Broward territory is annexed into cities, why does the County Commission still exist? The professional administrator hired to run day-to-day operations has me wondering, what’s being overseen?
Ergo, I agree with Ryan on the need for a mayor. But if we the people decide we want a mayor, the professional manager has to go. Ditto the nine overpaid commissioners. The basics of life, excluding the sheriff ’s duties, are handled by various cities and towns. The new mayor only has to oversee county infrastructure and the like. Think of the taxes the people would save by wiping out those other positions.
