Street to be named for Democratic fundraiser
Michael Moskowitz, father of Congressional nominee, died early this year at 68
PARKLAND — Michael Moskowitz, the accomplished Democratic fundraiser, attorney and lobbyist, and dad of his party’s nominee for Congress, will have a street named after him in his beloved Parkland.
Michael Moskowitz Drive will become the primary name for the stretch of University Drive between
State Road 827/Loxahatchee Road and the Sawgrass Expressway, city commissioners recently agreed.
Moskowitz is father to Jared Moskowitz, who served as a former state representative from northwest Broward, the former city commissioner in Parkland and worked as the former state emergency management director under Gov. Ron DeSantis.
He was most recently appointed to an empty County Commission seat by DeSantis.
In the August primary, Jared Moskowitz won the Democratic nomination for Florida’s 23rd Congressional District.
Moskowitz now emerges as the likely favorite to win the general election in November, as the district leans primarily Democrat.
Days before his death, Michael Moskowitz was able to watch his son get sworn in as a county commissioner.
He died Jan. 15, just a year and a half after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He was 68.
As an attorney, Michael Moskowitz had a stellar reputation.
As a staunch Democrat, he turned his Parkland estate into a venue to help his favorite candidates.
Parkland city spokesman Todd DeAngelis said there is no date yet for the street renaming.
“Look, Michael’s been a great supporter in our community,” said Mayor Rich Walker. “He’s a good contributor to charities, a great person in our community.”
“It was an honor to pass that bill” in conjunction with the Florida Legislature, he said, referring to Senate Bill 160, which was approved during the 2022 legislative session. It was part of the same bill that lawmakers signed off on Pio Ieraci Memorial Drive in honor of the president of the Galt Mile Community who died of COVID-19 in 2020.
Moskowitz is in rare company in Parkland. The only other Parkland street that bears the name of a resident is Olympic swimmer Dara Torres.
City commissioners voted to co-name Trails End as “Dara Torres Boulevard” in 2008.
