Safety Fejedelem added to active roster

- By David Furones

The concussion that has sidelined Miami Dolphins tight end Cethan Carter since the Sept. 11 opener has now landed him on injured reserve.

The team announced Carter was placed on IR on Saturday ahead of Sunday’s game at the rival New York Jets while activating safety Clayton Fejedelem. Both players are key special teams contributors when available.

Miami also elevated veteran offensive tackle Brandon Shell from the practice squad to the game-day roster.

Carter suffered his concussion in the second quarter of the Dolphins’ Sept. 11 win over the New England Patriots. He was involved in a collision on a kickoff.

In the three games since, Carter has been kept on the active roster but held out. He now faces at least four weeks on IR.

Fejedelem is set to make his 2022 debut after starting the season on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury. He was seen practicing this past week ahead of his activation, participating in special teams drills and positional work with defensive backs.

Fejedelem has played in 30 games over the past two seasons with the Dolphins, totaling 15 special teams tackles. He has appeared in 94 total NFL games with six starts after spending the first four years of his career (201619) in Cincinnati with the Bengals.

Shell gets his first elevation since joining Miami’s practice squad on Sept. 19.

The former fifth-round pick of the Jets in 2016 has 61 starts over six NFL seasons — four with New York and the last two with the Seattle Seahawks, with which he also started one playoff game in 2020.

Shell’s call-up gives the Dolphins an eighth offensive lineman for game day. The past three weeks, while right tackle Austin Jackson has been on injured reserve, that elevation was used on second-year tackle Larnel Coleman. Jackson, if healthy and ready, is eligible to return next week.

The lone elevation appears to bode well for many of the Dolphins starters that enter Sunday questionable, including wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, left tackle Terron Armstead and cornerback Xavien Howard.

For the Jets, veteran tackle Duane Brown is getting activated off injured reserve on Saturday, according to The Athletic. New York gets some relief at the ailing position with Mekhi Becton and George Fant on IR and Max Mitchell out Sunday.
