Van Dyke leaves game with injury

- By Adam Lichtenstein

MIAMI GARDENS — Hurricanes quarterback Tyler Van Dyke left the Hurricanes’ loss to Duke in the second quarter on Saturday and did not return.

The Miami third-year sophomore was sacked on a third-down play with 8:58 remaining in the first half, fumbling the ball and going down with an injury. Van Dyke left the game in apparent shoulder discomfort and went to Miami’s locker room with the Hurricanes trailing 14-7.

Cristobal said the staff would know how severe the injury is late Saturday or Sunday.

“He was banged-up enough where they did not feel comfortable putting him back in,” coach Mario Cristobal said.

Van Dyke was 11 of 16 for 81 yards and a touchdown when he left the game. Van Dyke has 1,737 passing yards this season with 10 touchdown passes.

Sophomore quarterback Jake Garcia, who has played in three games this season, entered the game for the Hurricanes on their subsequent drive. He went 13 for 21 for 198 yards and two touchdowns but turned the ball over five times: three times on interceptions and twice on a fumble.

Garcia will likely be Miami’s starter if Van Dyke’s injury keeps him out of future games. Garcia is 32 for 49 this season with 470 passing yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. He was a promising recruit coming out of high school; he was rated a four-star prospect and the No. 8 quarterback in the 2021 class in 247Sports’ composite rankings.

UM got reinforcements back vs. Duke: Miami looked likely to have several key returning players for its game against Duke on Saturday.

Tight end Will Mallory, center Jakai Clark, running back Henry Parrish Jr., wide receivers Jacolby George and Michael Redding III and cornerback Tyrique Stevenson were all warming up in pregame drills, indicating that they could be ready to play against the Blue Devils.

All of those players did not play against Virginia Tech last week except Mallory, who departed the game with an injury after taking a hard hit when catching a pass.

George has been out since Miami’s loss to Texas A&M with a hand injury. He has three catches for 41 yards this season.

Redding missed last week’s game after racking up 14 catches for 183 yards and a touchdown.

Mallory has been a key pass-catcher for the Hurricanes this season. He leads the team with 304 receiving yards on 23 catches.

Parrish’s return also will play a large role for Miami’s offense. He leads the team with 378 rushing yards and has four rushing touchdowns.

Stevenson has been one of Miami’s starting cornerbacks this year. He has 10 tackles, one interception and one pass deflection. He suffered an injury against North Carolina and did not play against Virginia Tech.

Clark also suffered an in-game injury against North Carolina and did not play against Virginia Tech. Jonathan Denis started at center in his stead.

The Hurricanes appear to still be missing two offensive linemen, tackle Zion Nelson and guard Justice Oluwaseun, and linebacker Waynmon Steed Jr. Nelson has been out since playing against Texas A&M after suffering a setback to the knee he had offseason surgery on. Oluwaseun suffered an injury that coach Mario Cristobal described as “significant” against North Carolina.
