Re: Palm Beach schools become a front line in the culture war | Editorial
As a former educator, I can say unequivocally that teachers do not have an untrammeled right to express their viewpoints in the classroom as your editorial of Nov. 9 suggested.
Would that “right” extend to a teacher who wants to exercise his or her “right” to display a Nazi flag or other objectionable symbol? Would pornography be acceptable, if the teacher believed that students had a need to to be exposed to his or her sexual preferences? Teachers have one and only one right and responsibility, and that is to teach children to read, write, compute and use their brains to succeed in life.
It’s the children’s lives that matter, not the teachers’.
