Heywood dominant again in 2M regional quarterfinal win

- By J. Darin Darst

FORT LAUDERDALE — Reggie Heywood’s magical season continues.

The senior running back ran for

297 yards on 26 carries with four touchdowns to lead Calvary Christian Academy over St. Andrew’s

49-34 to advance to the 2M regional semifinals.

Heywood, who has already set the school record for most rushing yards in a season, now owns the school mark for most TDs in a season with 21.

“Reggie’s fantastic... and the offensive line, the fullback and even our receivers,” said Calvary head coach Kirk Hoza. “Some of those plays, they would have him in the 10-yard area, but our receivers kept blocking and Reggie would squirt out of there.”

Heywood’s biggest runs of the night came with the Eagles clinging to a 28-21 lead with just over eight minutes to play and the ball on their own 16 yard line.Calvary (9-2) needed just two Heywood runs to open the game up to a two-score margin — a 31-yard run, followed by a 52-yard touchdown run.

“He’s a gifted young man, he’s strong, he’s fast, he sees well and he’s a smart kid,” added Hoza. “But I’m also very proud of our offensive line, they play hard for him and he plays hard for them.”

After the Scots (7-4) went three and out and were forced to punt, Heywood capped his scoring with a 32-yard touchdown run, giving the Eagles a 42-21 lead with about five minutes remaining.

“Without my offensive line, I wouldn’t have had one touchdown tonight,” said Heywood. “We knew we could come out here and run the ball. The defense gave us the ball back and gave us a chance.”

St. Andrew’s tried to stay in the game as Jake Cashion hooked up with sophomore Teddy Hoffmann for a 1-yard touchdown pass with 3:30 remaining, but Calvary marched right back down the field, this time quarterback Noah Diehl scoring from 17 yards out.

Cashion finished 30 of 50 passing for 304 yards with four touchdowns, while also rushing for one and Hoffmann had 12 receptions for 174 yards and three touchdowns.

After going down 7-0 earlier in the first quarter, Calvary answered right back with a 91-yard kickoff return by Allen Bryant. The Eagles took the lead for good when Yohan-Li Louis scored from 29 yards out for a 14-7 lead.

“We had our hands full with St. Andrew’s tonight,” added Hoza.

“I’m proud of our defense, we made some plays, had a couple taken away from us, but that happens. We didn’t really want to be in a shootout with them.”

The Eagles advance to play Cardinal Gibbons on Friday at 7 p.m.
