Leading RB Parrish out against Georgia Tech

- By Adam Lichtenstein

ATLANTA — Miami had two key players missing when they faced Georgia Tech on Saturday.

Leading running back Henry Parrish Jr. is out for the game, a source told the South Florida Sun Sentinel. Additionally, starting quarterback Tyler Van Dyke will not return from injury this week, according to ESPN.

Freshman Jacurri Brown started at quarterback for the Hurricanes against the Yellow Jackets on Saturday.

Van Dyke suffered a shoulder injury against Duke on Oct. 22 and tried to return against Florida State last week. However, he appeared to re-aggravate the injury in the second quarter and did not return to the game.

Brown received the most playing time of his young career against FSU. He completed 5 of 9 passes for 37 yards and threw one interception. He also ran 64 yards on 13 carries.

Garcia started for Van Dyke against Virginia, going 15 of 31 for 125 yards and no touchdowns. However, when he played against Duke and Florida State, he struggled with turnovers. He turned the ball over five times against the Blue Devils (three interceptions and two fumbles). Against the Seminoles, he went 1 for 2 for 1 yard and turned the ball over twice (one interception and one fumble).

Parrish has been the Hurricanes’ leading rusher this season with 569 yards and four touchdowns on 120 carries. He has missed time this season, as well, sitting out Miami’s road game against Virginia Tech on Oct. 15 with an injury.

At running back, Miami has options in Jaylan Knighton, Thad Franklin Jr. and Lucious Stanley.

Knighton leads the trio with

223 rushing yards this season, but he has no touchdowns and has fumbled three times. Franklin has

202 yards and leads the team with five rushing touchdowns. Stanley has 88 rushing yards this season.

Restrepo remembers former teammate: Miami wide receiver Xavier Restrepo and Georgia Tech signee Bryce Gowdy were teammates at Deerfield Beach High during in their senior years.

Restrepo is playing college ball, but Gowdy never got to Atlanta. Shortly before he was set to head to college, Gowdy died by suicide.

Nearly three years later, Gowdy’s death still weighs heavily on Restrepo’s mind.

“You know the quote, ‘Gone but not forgotten,’ “Restrepo said. “He will always be on my mind every time I step on the field, even in practice I’ll say a little prayer and just ask that he watches over me. This week is definitely going to be an emotional one. Every single time we play Georgia Tech, it’s been emotional at the beginning of the game for me because I know I’m supposed to have my brother out on the field with me.”

Although Gowdy never played for the Yellow Jackets, Georgia Tech still lists him on its roster.

“I’m glad that his name is still on their roster,” Restrepo said. “It means a lot. But this one’s definitely going to be one for him.”

Defensive line dented by injuries: Miami is missing several key defensive linemen due to injury on Saturday. Defensive tackles Jared Harrison-Hunte and Jacob Lichtenstein are out, as is defensive end Elijah Roberts, according to WQAM.

Harrison-Hunte, a fourth-year redshirt sophomore, has 16 tackles and two sacks this season. Lichtenstein, a sixth-year redshirt senior, has four tackles and one sack. Roberts, a third-year sophomore, has nine tackles.

’Canes commit checks out road game: Two Hurricanes commits from Georgia are taking in Miami’s road game on Saturday.

Four-star linebacker Raul Aguirre posted that he will attend the game at Bobby Dodd Stadium, and 247Sports reported that threestar offensive lineman Connor Lew will be at the game, as well.

Aguirre has 87 tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack and one interception for Fayetteville (Georgia) Whitewater High.

Miami’s 2023 recruiting class took a hit Friday morning when four-star quarterback Jaden Rashada flipped from the Hurricanes to the Florida Gators.
