Keep your eyes on the ultimate prize

and in this age of Trump, we are adopting new ways of resistance.

The unique cultivations of cultural expressions that we have been developing over the past five hundred years are finally being celebrated throughout the world. The latest example of the "Black Panther" movie, which has generated over a billion dollars in ticket sales (and climbing) in less than 2 months, is all good. It’s also all about being African (insert your own hyphen)!

Too many folk are quick to remind us that Africa is such a large continent. They ask, “Where are you from, originally?” One of the greatest tragedies suffered by Africans brought to the new world is the lost connection to a particular homeland/tribe/gene pool.

Now, it appears we will soon get an opportunity to answer that question in an upcoming census. I know the search for an answer will boost the sales of DNA test kits, designed to help us better determine more precisely where on the African continent our ancestors originated.

In America, we have been taught that our people were harvested from western African.

Contrarily, when I visited South Africa a few years back, I visited the African Slave Museum in Cape Town and learned about the history of the African slave trade dating back to the year 1000 +/-. To my great surprise, that history (with an accompanying map) traced movements of people around the interior of the African continent, and from around oceans (Atlantic and Indian) that traded people for centuries before the Atlantic Slave Trade began. There are volumes of records to support this narrative. Wow! I realized that my people can be from almost anywhere, not just from where American history books told me.

And that brings me back to the US census, Wakanda, and DNA. Get tested. It can be so enlightening. Claim Africa as the primary place of origin. That will be healing.

Check all the boxes available on the Census- that will be revealing.

“Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, let us march on till victory is won.”
