5 oz. fresh gin­ger, un­peeled and thinly

sliced (from 1 [5-inch] piece)

1 cup gran­u­lated sugar

3⁄4 cup wa­ter

1⁄4 tsp. kosher salt 3 cups fresh or­ange juice

(from 10 or­anges)

1 1⁄2 cups (12 oz.) bour­bon

1 1⁄2 cups sparkling min­eral wa­ter

(such as Topo Chico)

3⁄4 cup fresh lemon juice

(from 6 lemons)

Or­ange slices 1. Com­bine gin­ger, sugar, wa­ter, and salt in a saucepan. Cook over medium, stir­ring oc­ca­sion­ally, un­til sugar is dis­solved, about 8 min­utes. Re­move from heat, and cool com­pletely, about 2 hours. Pour through a fine wire-mesh strainer into a small glass mea­sur­ing cup, dis­card­ing solids.

2. Com­bine fresh or­ange juice, bour­bon, sparkling wa­ter, lemon juice, gin­ger syrup, and or­ange slices in a large punch bowl or pitcher. Stir to com­bine. Serve over ice.
