Spicy Bourbon-Citrus Punch,

5 oz. fresh ginger, unpeeled and thinly
sliced (from 1 [5-inch] piece)
1 cup granulated sugar
3⁄4 cup water
1⁄4 tsp. kosher salt 3 cups fresh orange juice
(from 10 oranges)
1 1⁄2 cups (12 oz.) bourbon
1 1⁄2 cups sparkling mineral water
(such as Topo Chico)
3⁄4 cup fresh lemon juice
(from 6 lemons)
Orange slices 1. Combine ginger, sugar, water, and salt in a saucepan. Cook over medium, stirring occasionally, until sugar is dissolved, about 8 minutes. Remove from heat, and cool completely, about 2 hours. Pour through a fine wire-mesh strainer into a small glass measuring cup, discarding solids.
2. Combine fresh orange juice, bourbon, sparkling water, lemon juice, ginger syrup, and orange slices in a large punch bowl or pitcher. Stir to combine. Serve over ice.
