Two arrested after man beaten

Two men were arrested early Friday morning after allegedly beating a man and pointing a handgun at a bystander outside a Waldorf bar. The victim suffered severe injuries and was taken to the hospital with a possible broken jaw, nose and orbital bone, court records indicate.

Tyrell Antonio Campbell, 28, and Marquis D’Angelo Hagens, 27, both of Waldorf, were arrested and charged with first- and second-degree assault. Police are continuing to investigate the incident to determine if others were involved in the attack.

Around 2:20 a.m. on Friday, deputies with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office responded to a bar located in the 2900 block of Waldorf Market Place for the report of an armed suspicious subject, police records show. Upon arrival, officers found the victim lying on the ground in the parking lot bleeding heavily, and had him transported to a hospital with injuries consistent with a broken jaw and possibly other broken bones in the face.

A witness reportedly told officers that he saw Hagens and Campbell attacking the victim, “kicking and punching [him] over and over again, leaving him helpless and injured on the ground,” court records state. When the witness tried to intervene, Campbell allegedly pointed a handgun at him before he passed the gun to Hagens as they continued to assault the victim.

After police were called, the witness said he saw Hagens get into a white Acura and drive off with another man. This vehicle was pulled over by an officer after running a red light on Crain Highway a few minutes later, and Hagens was arrested. The driver, who the victim later told police had also attacked him, has not yet been charged as of press time Tuesday. Police observed that the driver had blood on his shoulder and an abrasion, and took photographs for evidence. Campbell remained at the scene and was arrested.

Officers searched multiple vehicles belonging to the suspects, but were unable to locate a handgun. However, bloody clothing articles — believed to belong to Hagens — were found discarded near the bar.

Police later spoke with the victim at the hospital, who told them he remembered seeing at least three people attacking him: Campbell, Hagens and a woman, who was identified at the scene as a possible suspect, court records indicate. He believes there were more people involved, including the driver of the Acura.

Hagens was questioned further at the Charles County Detention Center. He told police that the alleged victim pulled a handgun on him and that is why he began attacking him, charging documents state.

Both Campbell and Hagens have posted bond and been released from custody, court records indicate. A preliminary hearing is pending for both.
