McRae, Wedding named to honors list at Fairleigh Dickinson
Kelia McRae of White Plains and Brianna Wedding of Mechanicsville were named to the honors list at Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Metropolitan Campus for the spring 2016 semester.
To qualify for the honor’s list, a student must carry a 3.5 or better grade point average out of a possible 4.0 and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 letter-graded hours (four courses).
Dietrich graduates from Fairleigh Dickinson
Justin Dietrich of Waldorf graduated in May from Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Metropolitan Campus with a master’s in electrical engineering.
Hartwell graduates from Morgan State
Denija C. Hartwell of Waldorf graduated from Morgan State University on May 21 with a bachelor of science in accounting.
Hartwell is the daughter of Michelle Thompson and Denard Hartwell.
Bishop named to MAC spring academic honor roll
Allison Bishop of Waldorf, a student-athlete at Stevenson University, was named to the 2016 Middle Atlantic Conference spring academic honor roll.
In order for a student to be selected as an academic honor roll athlete, they must play on a varsity sport while earning a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Flynn, Hartline named to dean’s honor list at Rensselaer
Byron Flynn of Waldorf and Christopher Hartline of La Plata were named to the dean’s honor list at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for the spring 2016 semester. The dean’s honor list recognizes students who attain a grade point average of 3.50 or better and have no grade below C.
Flynn is studying nuclear engineering.
Hartline is studying bioinformatics and molecular biology.
Olsen named to dean’s list with highest honors at McDaniel
Rebecca Lynn Olsen of Brandywine was named to the dean’s list with highest honors at McDaniel College for the spring 2016 semester. Highest honors are earned for a semester grade point average of 3.90 or higher, high honors for a grade point average of 3.70-3.89, and honors for a 3.50-3.69 average.
Olsen is a 2014 graduate of Thomas Stone High School.
Local students graduate from West Virginia Wesleyan; named to dean’s list
Emily Haws of Waldorf graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College.
Destinee Tunstall of Indian Head was named to the dean’s list at West Virginia Wesleyan College for the spring 2016 semester. To be named to the dean’s list, students are required to earn a grade point average of 3.5-3.9 in 12 or more semester hours.
Burke named to dean’s list at Loyola
Emily Burke of Mechanicsville was named to the dean’s list at Loyola University Maryland for the spring 2016 semester.
In order to qualify for the dean’s list, students must achieve a minimum QPA of at least 3.500 for the term, provided that in the term they have successfully completed courses totaling a minimum of 15 credits.
Donato named to dean’s list at Wittenberg University
Reid Donato of White Plains was named to the dean’s list at Wittenberg University for the spring 2016 semester. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a grade point average of at least 3.500 for a minimum of 12 graded semester hours.
Teleky graduates with honors from Tufts University
Nicholas Teleky of Waldorf graduated from Tufts University on May 22 with a bachelor’s in computer science cum laude.
Hill named to Wilmington University dean’s list
Zachary Hill, of Selbyville, Del., was named to the dean’s list in both the fall 2015 and spring 2016 semesters at Wilmington University in New Castle, Del. He will graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in K-6 early childhood education in 2018.
Hill is the son of Michael and Jennifer Hill of Selbville, and Laura and James Burke of Seaford. He is the grandson of Janice Painter of Seaford and John and Dana Painter of Georgetown, Del., and Lawrence and Veda Hill of Hughesville. He is the great-grandson of Dorothy Patterson of Waldorf.
Local students participate in research symposium at Frostburg
The following local students presented research at Frostburg State University’s 2016 Undergraduate Research Symposium in May. The event showcased poster and oral presentations of research or artistry from 221 students, mentored by 73 faculty members, across 16 academic departments within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
• Jeremy Cassidy of Waldorf presented “Examination of Quantity Discrimination in Cotton Top Tamarins (Saguinus oedipus)” alongside Kathryn Bell, which was performed under the tutelage of Dr. Erica Kennedy.
• Shavonne Hamilton of Accokeek presented “What Does Your Name Say About You? A Look into How Names Can Affect Our Lives Personally and Professionally” alongside Nelson Mwanza, which was performed under the tutelage of Dr. Elesha Ruminski and Dr. David Stern.
• Nicholas Huff of Brandywine presented “Solar Powered Cell Phone Charger” alongside Heather Lesniowski, which was performed under the tutelage of Dr. Oguz Soysal.
• Alicia Matthews of Brandywine presented “Reevaluating Appalachian Cottontail Status Using Fecal Pellet mtDNA Analysis” alongside Kelly Russo, which was performed under the tutelage of Dr. Frank Ammer.
• Mia McCaslin of Port Tobacco presented “Maryland Newspapers: The Nile’s Weekly Register” alongside Micah Ross, which was performed under the tutelage of Dr. Eleanor McConnell.
• Alexander Roman of Hughesville presented “Battery Powered Electric Scooter” alongside Papa Amoah, which was performed under the tutelage of Dr. Oguz Soysal.
• Jarrod Williams of Bryans Road presented “Utilizing Scapy for Penetration Testing” alongside Daniel Wade, Thomas Kraemer and Raphael Azenadaga, which was performed under the tutelage of Dr. Wenjuan Xu.
Arter named Dorsey Scholar at McDaniel
Justin Arter of Waldorf was named a Dorsey Scholar at McDaniel College for this fall earning a full-scholarship to the college. This is the highest academic honor at McDaniel and includes full tuition, room and board for all four years.
Arter is a recent graduate of North Point High School for science, technology and industry, where he was involved with the criminal justice program. He plans to major in economics and mathematics in order to work as a statistician for the federal government.
Dorsey Scholars must maintain a 3.5 GPA and live on campus all four years. They are also invited to enroll in McDaniel’s Honors Program.
Gray presents work at Frostburg State English Colloquium
Nicholas Gray of Brandywine presented “The Mental Faculties of a Supposed Madman in Crime and Punishment” at the Frostburg State University English Colloquium in April. The event showcased 17 outstanding written works by students of any major over the previous year and provided an opportunity for students to present their work in a professional academic setting.
Gray is an English major.
Local students receive scholarships from Frostburg State
The following local students received scholarships for study at Frostburg State University.
• Pateley Bongiorni, of La Plata, received the Nadeane A. Gordon Presidential Merit Scholarship for Vocal Music: In Honor of Bonnie Gurley Kunkel and Barry Lyndon Gurley, Sandra K. Saville Presidential Merit Scholarship for the Arts, Marguerite Witwer Richards Scholarship, Department of Music Choral Scholarship and Presidential Scholarship. Bongiorni is the daughter of Kim and Greg Bongiorni and attended McDonough High School.
• Laura Grassinger, of Mechanicsville, received the Associate Degree Scholars Award. Grassinger attended Chopticon High School.
• Carl McManus, of White Plains, received the Jennifer Leigh Johnson Theatre Scholarship, Leonard and Jane Schwab Theatre and Speech Scholarship and Founders Scholarship. McManus is the son of Donna and Clifton McManus Sr. and attended Westlake High School.
• Jasmine Proctor, of Brandywine, received the Leonard and Jane Schwab Theatre and Speech Scholarship. Proctor is the daughter of Shynika Butler and Shon Proctor and attended Thomas Stone High School.
• Kenneth Waters Jr., of Waldorf, received the Jeffrey P. and Carol A. Fegan Presidential Merit Scholarship, Woodward and Virginia Pealer Scholarship, Leonard and Jane Schwab Theatre and Speech Scholarship, Dr. Jack W. Vrieze Scholarship, Dorothy Stone White Scholarship in Theatre, Associate Degree Scholars Award and Talent in the Arts Scholarship II.
