A 27-year-old Waldorf woman was arrested for child neglect after allegedly passing out drunk in a running car with her infant inside at a Waldorf liquor store Dec. 1.

Kiara Antionette Massey, 27, of Waldorf was charged with neglect of a minor, two counts of second-degree assault, resisting arrest, disturbing the peace and failure to obey a lawful order.

On Dec. 1, deputies from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office and troopers with the Maryland State Police responded to Pinefield Liquors Drive Thru on Mattawoman Drive in Waldorf for a call of someone sleeping behind the wheel of a vehicle that was running in the drive through.

When officers arrived, they discovered a female passed out in the drivers seat of a Jeep Wrangler, according to court records.

An officer knocked on the window several times with no answer. After several moments, the female regained consciousness. The driver was identified as Massey and officers observed a small child in a carseat in the backseat of the vehicle.

An officer went to the driver side of the vehicle to talk to Massey, which is when he smelled a strong oder of alcohol emitting from her breath. Massey did not acknowledge or comply with any of the officer’s commands to exit the car for a sobriety test, according to police.

Officers were able to get her to exit the car, which is when Massey allegedly became disorderly, screaming and swinging to hit the officers surrounding her. With resistance, officers were eventually able to get Massey into handcuffs and place her in an agency vehicle.

An officer searched Massey and found two 50-milliliter bottles of vodka — one was full and one was empty. She allegedly refused to take an alcohol concentration test and stated that she knew she was drunk and that she only had two shots, according to court records.

Massey’s mother came to the scene and took custody of the defendant’s 1-year-old son, as well as the vehicle, which was a rental in her name.

Massey was arrested and taken to the Charles County Detention Center.
