I choose these candidates

-

Our June 26 Primary is getting near. It gives the voters of this county the chance to elect county commissioners who will continue to represent the best interests of the people. We need a majority of commissioners who do not adhere to the theory that any and all residential development proposals should be approved and built. If the majority is not kept, it will be back to the steady demise of our quality of life through overcrowded roads, overcrowded schools, loss of our natural resources, and taxes that continue to rise. These are the results of previous commissioner boards who had the majority of votes needed to approve the land planning that ignored this decade’s long demise.

Two of the candidates seeking re-election, Commissioner Peter Murphy (D) and Commissioner Amanda Stewart (D), have proven they want to stop this demise through their progressive actions in our Comprehensive Plan update. They have rezoned properties and instituted zoning texts that will contain the residential sprawl we all have watched

consume and destroy what is Charles County.

They need help to continue on this right path. Candidates Dr. Richard Cook, Ulysee Davis and Dyotha Sweat also need your vote and we need them as our representatives. Their ideas will make our county a better place to live for the current residents. Charles County cannot continue with the unchecked growth. This needs no explanation, anyone who looks around them can see its negative effects.

There are many candidates. I have read and heard many of them speak about their platforms. A lot of what I have heard sounds downright bizarre as they try to discredit the progress that has been made in the last four years by the majority of our current board of commissioners.

One idea I have learned is that our county is on the verge of economic collapse. After being scrutinized by Wall Street professionals, Charles County received the best bond rating we have ever had — AAA rating. I feel very certain that these financial experts do not hand out this rating to any entity whose economy is about to collapse.

Another idea is that our Comprehensive Plan

update was done in secret. By these accounts, residents had no say in what went into the update. I do not know where this came from. The county had many local meetings in all parts of our county. I attended two of them. At these, anyone had as much time as they wanted, and as many times as they wanted, to present their ideas to the county planning staff in attendance with a contractor compiling the information that went into the update. All the ideas and comments were considered and discussed at these meetings. The overriding concerns voiced by the residents was that our county was being overrun by development. Many told of the negative personal effects the growth was having on them. I absolutely heard no one say they wanted the schools and roads more crowded. No one said let’s keep bulldozing our natural resources until our waterways are ruined.

We have the chance to keep Charles County going in the right direction by voting for Peter Murphy, Amanda Stewart, Ulysee Davis, Dr. Richard Cook and Dyotha Sweat.
