In a clash of two teams poised to reach the postseason in their respective brackets, the Eagles withstood a late rally from the visiting Patriots to prevail, 34-24, in a Southern Maryland Athletic Conference Potomac Division contest on Friday night in Waldorf.

North Point (6-0, 3-0 SMAC Potomac) kept its perfect record intact heading into this weekend’s clash with fellow unbeaten St. Charles by breaking a 10-10 deadlock by scoring twice in the second quarter and added another 10 points in the third quarter for a 34-10 lead.

Northern (4-2, 1-2) rallied with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to get close, courtesy of a successful onsides kick.

“I thought we came out and did a lot of good things in the second quarter and the second half,” North Point coach Tom Petre said. “We put a few drives together and hit on some big plays and I felt pretty good going into the fourth quarter. But coach [Steve] Crounse over at Northern always has his guys ready and they got a touchdown in the fourth quarter and pulled off an onsides kick and got another touchdown late. His teams never quit and they got back in it, but I thought we played well.”

North Point quarterback Asa Williams completed 5 of 17 passes for 129 yards and two scores, connecting with Deandre Beverly on an 80-yard strike and then he hit Malik Lawrence for 44 yards and another score. Williams also rushed nine times for 29 yards and Corey Johnson carried 11 times for 82 yards and two scores.

North Point will travel to St. Charles for a 7 p.m. contest Friday against a Spartans team (6-0, 2-0) which trounced Leonardtown, 53-0, in Week 6.

Northern quarterback freshman Zach Crounse completed 8 of 20 passes for 155 yards and one touchdown while throwing two interceptions. Nick Olson was 4 of 7 for 69 yards and two touchdowns and one interception.
