Indian Head man fires gun inside of home after argument

Joseph Russell Gill Sr., 58, of Indian Head has been charged with first-degree assault and reckless endangerment after allegedly firing a gun inside his home during an argument with his wife, according to Charles County District Court documents.

On Oct. 22 at 11:39 p.m., Deputy Mohler responded to reports of gunshots at a home in the 5500 block of Mason Springs Road in Indian Head. The caller advised she heard arguing upstairs in the residence and heard numerous gunshots. The caller told police she left the residence after hearing items being broken and loud music.

Upon leaving, the caller said they witnessed a vehicle leaving the residence in what was described as a farm-style truck, with a “primer” color.

When Mohler arrived on the scene, he heard a loud yell from another officer on the scene. A white male with long hair was standing at the wood line, yelling at a woman at the residence. Deputies drew their guns and commanded the man to show his hands and lay down on the ground. The man initially failed to obey commands given by officers but eventually complied and was taken into custody.

It was later discovered that the man was Gill. Gill allegedly confessed he fled the area after the incident but returned when he saw police come to the residence. He parked his truck at the end of the driveway and walked back to the residence, standing at the wood line to observe what was going on, until officers located him.

Gill and the victim, his wife, had been arguing.

Gill left for work and returned on Oct. 23. At 7:30 p.m., Gill and the victim began drinking alcohol. The victim told police Gill consumed a pint of Crown Royal prior to the going to bed in their bedroom. After laying down, the victim told officers Gill got out of bed and allegedly began yelling at her and accusing her of cheating on him. Gill exited the bedroom and went to the first floor of the residence. The victim followed Gill and they both continued arguing.

The victim told officers she went back into the bedroom and heard Gill breaking items inside their home. She heard multiple gunshots coming from the lower level of the residence, which she believed to be a .22 caliber rifle which Gill leaves beside the back door to the residence. Gill then came upstairs, without the firearm, documents report, and allegedly kicked in the bedroom door.

Gill entered and retrieved his money from the room and left.

When Mohler entered the residence, he observed approximately 10 to 12 holes in the ceiling on the second floor and found a .22 caliber rifle beside the back door of the residence, along with numerous spent shell casing lying on the floor in the kitchen, foyer and stairs of the residence.

Gill was arrested, charged and taken to the Charles County Detention Center.
